Q: iOS 8.0.2 grayed out wifi on my iPhone 4s

This is ridiculous and I'm so furious. This incident may deter me from EVER purchasing another product from Apple ever again. The new software has disabled my wifi completely, and the button is grayed out. I tried all the possible solutions they pose on the support site, but nothing, of course, was successful. I know it is a software problem and the fact that I can't talk to anyone on the phone about it is  absolutely ridiculous. I'm not paying $20 for a software mistake on Apple's part. If there is anyone who knows how to fix this problem without having to wait for the next update, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, but iOS7 does not help you, as this started with iOS7.

So there we are then.  I have an Iphone 4s out of warranty which has greyed-over wifi.     I've seen a phone for sale in ASDA tonight for £25.  It can do more than my Iphone!

It actually has been around since iOS 5.

    It's a hardware failure.

If you're within warranty, it's a free replacement from Apple.

If not, then it's a reduced price replacement.

    All perfectly fair.

Mine is iphone 5 so not that old.  I updated it to 8.1.  it also happened to me, first the bluetooth was gone and then wifi greyed-out.  I tried the freezer method, it worked but after 30 minutes of using the phone, it felt warm again in my hand so bluetooth and wifi malfunctioned again.  Put it again in the freezer and it worked then malfunctioned again.  Called Apple and they said to bring it to the apple shop.  Hopefully because it is still under warranty, they can fix it and wont happen again.  I hope its not going to happen again after fixing the chip.  Because if they fix the chip and i my phone is still running on 8.1 it might happen again.

I got the same problem since updating to 8.0 and now 8.1 (never experienced with 7+).
I tried the freezer like many did, but it only returned the button, not the WIFI.
The button was working again, but it couldn't find any signal, just constantly searching for it,
and draining the battery in the process.
So I decided to reset the network, and it's back to grayed-out again.
And after consulting with my carrier, they offer to sell me a new 4S for $240.
Well, with that price, you can buy any new phone with WIFI.
It's Apple's fault, who made the software to mess up with my phone,
and now I'm forced to buy a new one?

Lucky us, at least we have reason to buy a new phone.

The software didn't 'mess up the iPhone'.  The update process, which puts strain on the processor and associated components, may have revealed a pre-existing defect.

And no, you can't buy a comparable device for $240, not unless you're getting a discount from your carrier.

guys, here is some update from my mysterious fight with my cool 4s..today, I needed to restart (but I did restarted few times with no problem) and wifi button again greyed out. it was about month since my 'heating and cooling' and it was working. anyway I noticed some problems with wifi connection last week or so. so today morning it was greyed out again after restarting the phone. so I tried only putting it switched off into freezer for 12min, then waited for about 15mins in the normal room temperatute and the button is there again !!!! so maybe heating up the phone is not needed ??? lets see how long this will work its crazy !!!!!!

Can we assume then it's not a hardware fault? I mean it's actually a working thing, but this maybe bug in software that does not allow to work in normal conditions? It should not be so hard for apple to give any answer regarding this issue where so many people are involved. But I understand, it's easier and more profitable to offer you a replacement for about $260.

Why the **** should we have to put an expensive product in the freezer or warm it up with a hair-drier?     I s there any Apple response to this issue?     Absolutley disgusted.

How cool is that to have not just an iPhone with you, but also iHairdrier and iFreezer to use your iPhone.

In future these will be the world most advanced, smartest and best designed gadgets everyone will carry one. The only question remains is what we need to carry on, to get iHairdryer and iFreezer properly work. But will get to know it, if Apple can tell us what the heck is wrong with these wifi/bluetooth issues.

That would be a faulty assumption.  It is a hardware fault.  There are millions of iPhone 4S units that upgraded to iOS 6, iOS 7 and iOS 8, with no problems with wi-fi.  If it was a software fault, then it would affect virtually all iPhone 4S units.

And while you may think that there are 'so many people involved', it's actually a very small percentage of iPhone 4S units that have this hardware defect.

If you are within warranty, you can get a free replacement (usually, barring any physical damage or other issue that voids the warranty).

If not, then you can (usually) get a replacement from Apple for $199 USD + tax.

That's Apple's response to this, or any other hardware defect.  Get it replaced under warranty, or pay the reduced price for an out-of-warranty replacement.

One of two things: is either they don't know what is the issue which I highly doubt or they just could not care  any less about 4S /any older models of its not the newest model.

My 4S wifi still work from the heat n cool thing, the wifi signal bar just decided to return on the main screen days ago, be4 I didn't know if it was connected to net or not unless I try to opened a web. Page. Bluetooth still not working. Battery still drains out by end of day.

Today I found a solution to ALL my problems  with Iphone 4S after upgrade to IOS 8.2, i.e locking up, greying out of WiFi and fast battery drain.

This is the link and It actually works.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mK5Piz5XZVg

I am one very happy bunny and now my phone works fast, has a good battery life and a very happy owner....at last.

I found I didn't have to heat it enough to get to the overheat warning as I was being cautious and slightly skeptical, but it still worked....A-MAZE - ing.

Sorry to say, but as confirmed by many of users it is still a temporary fix that you may can lose any minute (also not sure what damage it could do for your phone to heat up and freeze and then condensate).
