iPhone 6 Plus Speaker Issue

I have an iPhone 6 Plus and just this morning I noticed a potential issue with my main speaker. I'm referring to the speaker on the bottom of the phone, not the ear speaker used when talking to someone. Anyway I noticed that when the volume is high, about 90% of the max or more, I heard an intermittent light crackling or popping sound when playing music, watching youtube, or using the speakerphone. Has anyone else noticed this, or is my speaker defective somehow?

Hi taliota24,

Although this article doesn't mention the iPhone 6, the troubleshooting steps would be the same for your iPhone.

iPhone: No sound or distorted sound from speaker

  1. Verify that the volume is set to a level you would normally be able to hear.
  2. Ensure that there is nothing plugged in to the headset jack or the dock connector.
  3. If the iPhone is in a protective case, make sure that the speaker port isn't blocked by the case.
  4. Make sure that the speaker and dock port aren't clogged with debris. If necessary, clean it with a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush. Carefully and gently brush away any debris.
  5. If an audio issue occurs when using a specific application, try testing other applications to see if the issue persists.
  6. If the iPhone is paired with a Bluetooth headset or car kit:Restart the iPhone.
  7. Restart the iPhone
  8. If restarting doesn't fix the issue, ensure that your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS.
  9. If the issue is not resolved, please contact Apple Support.

Take care,

Same issue here - no case in the way, just switching to full volume on the external speaker and the distortion is audible when impulses are to much for the external speaker that is build in.

Also I got my iphone 6plus last week. and because of the distortion issue I got today an exchange warranty iphone 6plus

The problem stays , so hopefully Apple looks into this, what happens with audiophile material on full volume in their hardware construction of the ext. speaker.

My opinion is not out of boredom or bashing anyone!!!

- to me the iphones are great tools to demo music examples at shows - I run an Audio company and have the same music library on ipad, iphone5 and even iphone 4 .

Some of the music is mp3 most of it is higher data quality also I have Spotify premium and I have now created a file saying:" distortion examples".

NONE of the other apple devices I have produces any distortion at all.

It can easily be reproduced for example with the following track from Melody Gardot " So Long" - it starts right at the guitar intro.
So in case one wants an example to see if it is a general problem on the new hardware

Thanks for starting this theme and thanks to those who look competently into it.

I've played the Melody Gardot one at max vol in my iphone 6+ and I don't hear any extraordinary difference in distortion compared to other iphone models.

I certainly do not hear any light cracking or popping sounds and I've played Skyfall from Adele and Strange Times by The Black Keys on max volumen so far.

I'd go to an Apple Store and try the display models before making a Genious appointment.

I Have the same issue but it became worse. Now my speaker won't play anything anymore. It started with a little crackle now and then, a couple of days later it was full static white noise and now it's like the speaker is dead.

Bit it isn't, it's a software thing. i backed up my iPhone using iTunes and the did a full reset on the iPhone itself. After the reset and reboot the blank iPhone was playing music perfectly. (iTunes store previews since I had nothing on there)

After the joy of hearing sound I put back my backup with iTunes and now the sound is all gone again... So no clue why but it's not a hardware thing...

The first step is to check your MUTE button setting. Check volume output by using side button controls.

Assuming that you have done this, check that your device is not streaming to Airplay or Bluetooth via Remote or some other setting.

Plug your headphones in and check for sound.

Unplug headphones and sound will be restored as this forces the device to divert to that source, i.e. your internal speaker.

It's frustrating but not a big issue.

Hope this helps!
