How do I get a Smart folder to include files from a virtual drive (Mydrive.sparseimage) as well as the Mac HD?
I was previously told to use this terminal window command:
sudo mdutil -i on "/Mydrive.sparseimage"
but that doesn't seem to work on Mavericks and I get this message:
Error: invalid operation.
Error: unknown indexing state.
Suggestions?

You can’t index an unmounted Sparse Image file. You can index the mounted volume, though.
Mount the image and do the same command on the mounted volume.
Note that the index is created on the mounted volume. So, if it is not mounted, it won’t be searchable.
Yes, I understand and I do have the drive mounted but still get that error. Further thoughts welcome.
Your example command shows you are trying to index the image file, not the mounted Volume.
I just used the command Apple support gave. Please could you tell me what it ought to be.
The command is correct. The argument is not.
Replace "/Mydrive.sparseimage” with the path to your mounted volume.
You can just type the command, leave a space, then drag the mounted volume into the Terminal window. Use Finder, Go menu, Computer to find the mounted Volume.
OK, finally got it to work, many thanks. The working version was this:
sudo mdutil -i on Volumes/Mydrive
without quotes and without the .sparseimage extension. Part of the problem was that the actual name use where Mydrive appears has a space so I had to use the \ escape character first.
