Q: Why are most of the FREE apps showing a cost?

Why are the majority of the "FREE" apps now costing up in the $4.99 to $9.99 area?? First time I visited the free section list (which I visit regularly) it took me directly to buy Minecraft. Now, most of the free ones are paid apps clear up to $10 range? What is going on?

iPod touch, iOS 6.1.6, Just started this crap this evening

Because they are only free to new customers:
Free Apple apps for your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch with iOS 8

To qualify for these free apps, you need a device that was activated or purchased on or after September 1, 2013.
