Microphone not working (Mac Mini)

My Mac-mini microphone is not working what can I do?

Actually I searched the forums for the answer to this question and found the answers only mildly helpful.

Either it wasn't the answer to my question, or it was hidden in a bit of tech-talk that I didn't really understand.

So, for the less tech-savvy like myself, I have posted this question and answer.

I spent ages going into settings, and sound and trying to configure everything, but that wasn't the problem.

On the back of the mini there is a port for audio in and a port for audio out.

When I visited the local apple store they told me that the mic jack that plugs in needs to have three black rings on the part that plugs in, in order for the microphone to work on a mac mini. The only proper headsets (not the earbuds) were quite expensive. So I visited a more generic store.

Most of the headsets with the three rings were ugly, so I started looking at blue-tooth headsets.

Eventually, I found a set at a reasonable price, that were not entirely ugly, and so I bought this set.

Hooked up to my mini and no issues!

So, make sure your jack has three black rings, get a blue-tooth headset, or some other posts recommend using a USB headset.

(I live in a non-English speaking country, and so I didn't understand everything the guy said, but this is how I overcame the problem)

I hope this helps some of you out there.

So I am not sure where the links tie into the discussion of microphone issues because it talks about sound output but maybe I'm missing something. At any rate, I can't get any microphone to work with my MacMini, the Apple supplied earbuds with a mic, the mics that work on my iPhone, iPad and MacBook Air, none of them. But I do have a battery powered mic that I use with my camcorder. It is not USB. Will that work, or does it have to be a USB microphone?

The headphone port has a mic input. It is the third ring on the plug. You can see if yo compare that plug with a pluyg for headohones that do not have a mic/remote.

This also applies to the newer Mini

Without more info on the camcorder mic I can't tell if it will work

When connected do you see any input in System Preferences>Sounds>Input?

Ok, so I plugged my microphone into the earphone jack and it works. It is a 3 ring microphone that I bought to use with my iPhone and iPad. It happened to work on the Air so I was confused as to why it wouldn't work with my Mini. But I was using the other line-in port. What is that port for?

It does show in my sound input in settings which again is why I thought it should work. It says, Line In then the description is Audio Line In Port. So presumably that is for some type of audio in such as an MP3 or voice recorder and not a microphone. Is that correct?

Thanks for your help Illaass! I can now use the voice over feature in iMovie which is what I was looking to do.
