Sound works fine, but headphone controls no longer work? IOS 8 Iphone5

as the header states, not more phone control with headphones. they are standard iPhone earbuds that come with my iPhone 5. they still work on my mac and my iPad, as well as wife's iPhone 5 and a friends iPhone 4s. i have been having this issue since updating to iOS 8. i have also cleaned out the headphone jack with a dry q-tip as well as with one with electronic grade isopropyl alcohol.

a side issue i have noticed since the update is that my home button almost automatically opens up expose on the phone each time i hit it to go back to the home screen. is there somewhere to slow down the speed of the double tap required for this to happen?
