Can you give an example? Since they cannot be read on an iphone it doesn't make much sense to let people buy them.

Sure, either .epub or .pdf format will work fine.
The Apple app for .epub is Pages, but there are many others. Just not iBooks Author.
There are countless apps to produce .pdf, including both Pages and iBooks Author.
