I know it can be annoying to have your Mac's keyboard be unresponsive for intervals such as you describe. I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -
Troubleshooting wireless mouse and keyboard issues
In particular the section labeled Keyboard or mouse intermittently stops responding.

Mar 6, 2015 11:55 AM in response to Norm Harrisby C C Wells,I have a similar issue - symptom is as I type, system can't keep up with keyboard, and even pops up the alternate keys (diacriticals, e.g.) -
Keyboard is wired, Yosemite is up to date. Not using Mouse Keys. It just seems like the system gets to a point where it can't keep up any more with the input coming from the keyboard.

Etrecheck a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here (and recommended by Apple Support personnel) in the ASC to help identify the more obvious culprits that can affect system performance.
