Q: Ibook G4 not charging or staying on

I have an iBook G4 that won't charge the battery or stay on once powerewd up.  When I hold the button on the battery it only has 1 light and none at all when not plugged in.  The power cord lights up orange when plugged in and turns green sometimes like it's charging, but if left untouched for hours on green the battery still doesn't charge.  When the plug is green it powers up and looks normal but now it doesn't stay on long enough for me to even get the serial number to give support.  I stopped using this iBook for this reason in the first place but now have returned to working with some people on music from some time ago  and alot of the files and sessions from protools are in there and I need to use this cpu again to finish these up and transfer all of my data onto a backup.  I want to get this iBook to function properly again, not just scan or extract data from hard drive. Any help would be much appreciated.

If you're certain the power cord is good, then the DC-in board may need to be replaced. It handles power flow in the computer and could be the source of your issue.

ifixit.com has instructions for replacing the part and may sell it also. If memory serves, it's a fairly inexpensive & simple repair.

Try booting it without the battery in place. The battery can go bad and also present these symptoms. If you just need the info off there you might be able to get it into target mode. Otherwise if you don't want to try the repairs you'd have to pull the HD and plug it into a USB "dongle" and plug it into a working Mac to retrieve your files.
