Q: iPad Bricked

I just got a new "iPad with Retina Display". As soon as I connected it to iTunes (on Windows 7)it said I shuold upgrade to IOS 8.0.2. Numerous

attempts to upgrade have failed with various errors - 9006. 3014 etc.  Now the iPad is in "recovery mode"

Various instructions say to connect to iTunes again and restore the device,  But when I click Restore it first tries to resume the unstallation of

IOS 8.0.2 which of course fails

My iPad is now a brick,  Any suggestions on how to fix this?. Or just restore it to factory settings so I can return it and get my money back

iPad 2, iOS 7.1.2

    Greetings CountMountjoy,

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

It sounds like you’re running into an issue upgrading iOS on your iPad with Retina display, iTunes is displaying a few different alert messages. I can imagine this would be frustrating. Take a look at the article linked below, it provides a lot of great information and troubleshooting suggestions that will resolve most issues like this.

    Resolve network errors

Related errors: 17, 1004, 1013, 1638, 3014, 3194, 3000, 3002, 3004, 3013, 3014, 3015, 3194, 3200, or "There was a problem downloading the software," or say the "device isn't eligible for the requested build.". These alerts mean that your computer is either having difficulty contacting the Apple update server or communicating with your device.

Check your computer for software or settings that might cause communication issues between your computer and Apple or between your computer and your device.

    Check your security software

Related errors: 2, 4, 6, 9, 1000, 1611, 9006. Sometimes security software can prevent your device from communicating with either the Apple update server or with your device.

Check your security software and settings to make sure that they aren't preventing a connection to the Apple servers.

    I hope this helps.

I tried all that.  Disabled my Anti Virus, Ran iTunes in Administrator mode. Installed a new copy of iTunes on a different PC.  But iTunes always  insisted on installing IOS 8 which always failed, eventually leaving my iPad stuck in Recovery Mode.

I took it to my  Apple Store and the "Apple Genius"  (I guess that's a better name that "Geek Squad") was able to reset it and install IOS 8.   He said this is not an uncommon problem with iTunes & Windows -- sync and backup work fine, but upgrading IOS fails.  He suggested that the next time I need to upgrade IOS, I should bypass iTunes and use my WiFi connection. It will take longer, but should work.

I am glad this happened before I had loaded a bunch of stuff.

    Thanks for the reply.
