iPhone 6 poor picture quality

I have an iPhone 6 (64gb AT&T) running iOS 8.02 and I'm experiencing poor image quality with photos taken with the camera. It looks they are artificially over sharpened and fairly pixelated when compared to photos taken with my iPhone 5. It's most noticeable when capturing skin tones in a lowish light setting. It almost looks like there has been a bad watercolor effect added to then photo. I'm attaching a few examples that have been cropped to show the problem spots. Anyone else having this issue?

Hello nash123456

To be honest, I see watercolor (Oscar-Claude Monet 😉) effect also on your iPhone 5s. Just take a look closer on your cropped picture.

I have iPhone 6 and I am unhappy, coz I cant take good quality pictures of my child with it. So I guess, best would be to take my DSLR with me, every time we go out 😉

Back to your post. Try to take exact same pictures, so they both have exact lightning conditions and also same distance (your iPhone 6 looks little further distance than iPhone 5s). Maybe then we will see the difference, you are talking about.

I think, that if you want kinda crisp pictures, try to go closer to object and also try to be in really good lit conditions.

Have a nice day.

Hi, and thanks for your email. I see the issues that you brought up. The problem is, I have other photos that I have taken at the same distance and with the subject doing the same pose, and am still seeing the effects. I think the main issue is that I was expecting better performance from a 12MP setup compared to an older 8MP setup, and it is making me uncomfortable. I realize that no phone camera can take the place of a DSLR or a good point-and-shoot camera, but I was hoping that this would be close to it.

I just took from same distance photos with my wifes Samsung S4 and then with my iPhone 6.

Both were with flash, coz its in a dark room.

I see that the S4 is warmer and more realistic color to me, but the i6 do better on hair on close pictures.

What I say, there is not much difference in my oppinion when you take really close pictures (this was 20cm from face).

But when I take picture from distance (1m), there it is - a Monet like effect 😉

Almost same as on the old S4.

So I think this is case in most cameras on phones. No matter the MPx. The problem may be with the size of an senzor? Dont know, I am not a photographer.

But what I came up with this little test is:

..the more you do this:

-just a tiny hand shake

-low light

-bigger distance

...the more Claude Monet you get 😉

Here are pictures:

I doubt that Apple can resolve this. If they could, I think they would do it already. I think if they lower the noise reduction, pictures would be horrible. But maybe I am mistaken.

I think the solution for now is to have nice lightning conditions, really steady hand and closer distance. Also unmovable object of interest would be probably nice.

Tell me your opinion, or try more test.

Maybe comparsion with phone steady with timer on unmovable object and phone just in hand would be nice to see...what do you think?

Hey,

i have a new iPhone now for a few days. Before i had a 4s. I really noticed the strong picture noice reduction. Looks like a watercolor image. I thought i should change to another phone, but its a software problem. I made a lot of tests with the internal iPhone camera app and a another app that can take tiffs without apples jpeg compression. And finally what a wonder..... i get a wonderful picture quality. Better in low light than every iPhone before. I don't know why they have such a strong jpg compression that ruins the picture.

best

Hey,

i read a lot in the internet about this problem , i tested camera+ and there was no difference, every time i compared with iPhone 4s and 5s , than i found 645pro app . Its not an easy app, its like a DSLR, but with tiff settings i get all pictures clear without the blurry noise reduction. Now the new iPhone can show its power in detail and low light 😉

hey , here a few photos with the 645 app. It was yesterday evening with some lights, no daylight. So its a bit grainy but you definitely see the difference. I do not post the older iPhone pics, they lack in low light and look in comparison to iPhone 6 horrible. For me there is no watercolor effect any more. Only the grain but thats normal in the low light.
