Thanks Brian.  So 8.1.1 was out 'after' 8.2?

Here's the sequence for iOS 8 releases ...

    1. 8.0 [or 8.0.0]
    2. 8.0.1 [removed within a couple of hours]
    3. 8.0.2
    4. 8.1 [or 8.1.0]
    5. 8.1.1

I went from 8.0.2 -to- 8.1.0 ... instead of going to 8.0.3 ... because of the inclusion of some new features. If it were purely a bug fix (exclusively) then it would have been named ... 8.0.3. But it included iCloud Photo Library and iCloud Drive (new features) so it was named 8.1 (or what would be 8.1.0, but the trailing zero is dropped).

I hope that makes the naming scheme more clear ... :-) ...

The answers in regards to (1) Apple, and then to (2) Steve Jobs ... were not for "tech support answers" but to let you know what Apple does and then that it was Steve Jobs himself that put Apple on this kind of "track" as to how they respond. Apple's response -- per Steve Jobs -- is to NOT TALK ABOUT IT, but to FIX IT and then nothing more is needed. "THAT" is Steve Jobs for you ... :-) ...

Thanks Star, for that iOS sequence!  So you think I'm safe upgrading my iPad2?  And...is it okay to go straight to the latest upgrade and not get the in-between ones?

i believe this fix is for ipad 2 and iPhone 4s specifically!

the 1st mini has the same A5 specs as the ipad 2.

It's impossible to go to the in between ones. Only IOS 8.1.1 is available. Yes it's safe but not mandatory that you upgrade.

So you think I'm safe upgrading my iPad2?

NOW ... I'm not going to be guaranteeing anything ... but will say that many iPad 2 users who had prior problems are reporting success with iOS 8.1.1. At the same time, there is a shrinking minority of iPad 2 users who report no change from their prior problems. I think if you do a clean system install, you will do the installation the best way possible. I'll give those instructions down below.

And...is it okay to go straight to the latest upgrade and not get the in-between ones?

When you do it, Apple only provides the latest revision and none of the ones you've skipped ... no matter how many intervening revisions there are.

Here's the procedure I've posted elsewhere ... and you'll have the most recent revision when you do this.

Follow this procedure for a Troubleshooting Methodology ... basically reset to factory default condition -BUT- be sure to do the following methodically and also to follow the part with Apple Support!

First you want to make sure you have several backups of your data and done with a couple of "different" sources. Be sure to understand what data is backed up and what is NOT on iCloud Backup and iTunes Backup. Use a variety of methods for backup ... you might check into Dropbox, in addition to your Apple options.

Then turn off your desktop anti-virus software when using iTunes for this reset to factory default. After you do that reset, then leave your iPad in its factory default state and see how it operates then. If you encounter any problems in that factory default state, then take it to Apple Support, and let them know that you have just reset it to that state with iTunes and have not put any of your data back on and it is operating in this fashion (whatever the problem is) in that pristine state. Make sure you keep that trouble ticket number, because if it has to be escalated through Apple Support, you're going to find all communications tied in with that number. If the lower level help isn't able to help you, then escalate it to a higher level to examine the problem. Keep at it with that trouble ticket number until Apple Support arrives at a solution to that problem. Be methodical and keep at it.

On the other hand, if everything is okay with the factory default condition, then restore your backup. Some people have discovered that the problem resides in the apps or something in the restored backup. If that's the case, then it's going to be trying and difficult to find out which developer's app is causing you the problem. And ... it's true ... that a developer not following Apple's instructions and guidelines for his app can CAUSE YOU TROUBLE. This kind of thing does happen from developers, especially when a new system upgrade comes out, because some developers ignore what Apple tells them about changes coming, and what they do BREAKS SOMETHING.

This is a troubleshooting methodology that you are going through. See it through to the end.

One more thing, in addition to my prior post. Some other users have reported that some apps have actually caused a majority of their problems on their iPads, and when they got rid of those apps, their problems went away. BUT just like all other "solutions" given here, no solution is 100% effective; there are always some users who say it doesn't help.

The two apps which were identified as causing problems to the iPads were (1) the WSJ app [Wall Street Journal] and (2) Facebook. Those people who have had success with the removal of these apps say the their mere presence will cause a problem and/or merely running them just ONE time.

You may not have either one, but if you do -- get rid of them!

JJust updated to iOS 8 and my iPad is showing pages too large to fit on the screen. Can't shrink and have to move the page right or left to see it.

FUnky performance but this just is impossible to work with. I restarted but no help.. Any thoughts?

Star, you have been a great help!  I appreciate all of it and will remember this thread should I need to direct someone to the same kind of help.  But you know what I'm going to do...  I'm going to get an Ipad Air 2 next week.  And trade in this old one which has served me SOOOOO well.  I have my whole life on my iPad and I won't tell you how much time I spend on it.  I don't have the WSG or Facebook apps so that's good.

Thank you so much again for your time and energy and all the good info!

Try double tapping the screen with three fingers to return to normal size. Then go to settings> general> accessibility> zoom> off.

Can I recommend not trading your iPad 2 in. You might not like the iPad Air 2 and will need the iPad 2. You can always sell it at a later sate. Me personnally after after a year and a half of service my iPad 4 will never be sold.

Congratulaions on your soon-to-be ... new iPad!

I will note here, when transferring your data over to your new iPad, make sure you know which items set not saved in either your iCloud Backup or your iTunes backup. There are some things which will not be included. Those Apple Support documents up above will help you understand that. Also, on your pictures, you might want to try "Shoebox" and do the 30-day free trial, as a secondary backup to doubly make sure. The other possibility is to use Dropbox. I usually like to make doubly sure on my backups ... :-) ...

Where did you get 8.2?  To my knowledge, the latest released version is 8.1.1.
