Aug 29, 2015 5:50 AM in response to Meg St._Clairby Meg St._Clair,Didn't you give me the link last time year, too? Whatever would I do without you!
Apple has a long history of taking good ideas and incorporating them.

One would think it was just common sense. However, we've all been here long enough to know that it's not. I'm glad Apple is putting those instructions out there. However, I"m still not sure how many people will see them. As always, there will be a (large) subset of people who are so focused on the new features that they won't have the patience to do the proper prep work.
Now, if we could just get people into the habit of doing this stuff regularly, it wouldn't be much effort at all when update time comes along.

Aug 29, 2015 7:24 AM in response to Meg St._Clairby bobseufert,I keep forgetting to tell you the story. When IOS 7 came along I only had my iPad 6 months so I just hit install. A year later after reading the horror stories in the Forum I wanted to be prepared for IOS 8. 8 went fine. 8.1 didn't, it failed midway and I got the Recovery Icon. The Apple Store did the update, iCloud restore and I ended up with 4GB more memory space. It restored everything. Remarkable.

Glad it all worked out well!

Sep 25, 2015 2:58 PM in response to Chicochopsby Abinoone,I had the same problems when I upgraded to iOS 8.0.2 On my iPad 2. The slowness in opening & closing apps, surfing the web, etc. is so bad that my iPad is almost unusable. Previously, I had no such issues and was very happy with my iPad. I scheduled an appointment with a "genius" at the local Apple store, who was quite friendly and eager to help solve my problems. He backed up my apps & data, reinstalled the iOS, then informed me that I would see dramatic improvements after my data and apps finished reinstalling over the next few hours. I'm sorry to report that there was NO improvement at all.
I'm quite disappointed that operating system upgrades all but force customers to buy a new device; in fact, it makes me wonder if the intent is purposeful on Apple's part as a way to drive revenues. I also find it suspect that Apple provides no means of reinstalling an older version of the OS, as other manufacturers do (e.g. Windows). My needs are simple and unsophisticated - surf the web, download a few apps, occasionally stream a movie, read and e-book which, until my OS upgrade, were very well met by my iPad 2. I certainly shouldn't have to buy a new device, and am hoping that someone can tell me exactly how to solve my current performance problems. If no acceptable solution can be found, however, you can be sure that I will look at competitive tablets before plunking down my money.

Sep 25, 2015 6:22 PM in response to Abinooneby petermac87,Do remember that the iPad2 is now quite an old device containing old hardware that is not capable of getting the most out of new software. My wife still has an iPad3 and an iPhone 4s that are performing exceptionally well with iOS9.0.1 but that is just how technology is advancing. It is not all about profit, it is about customer demand, and customers do not want old hardware devices anymore, que sera sera

Sep 26, 2015 5:23 AM in response to petermac87by Abinoone,REgardless of its age, if my iPad 2 is performing well, Apple should provide the means for it to continue in service (e.g. reverting to an older iOS). Instead, Apple encourages users to upgrade the IOS, which in many instances renders devices all but useless (Just look at the comments in this thread). I think it disingenuous to say this isn't about profit.

Most of the very clever people here can be sarcastic and say useful things at the same time. It makes things more entertaining.
