Hi all,
I am also having this issue. I attend a dance class and try to video the routine at the end of the class. The class is in low level light. It came to my attention when my friend sent me a video of the same class that they took on their android device - in comparison, his was really light and mine was really dark.
This is so obviously a software issue they need to rectify. I've sent apple a message about it.
They seem to be dragging their feet of an issue which is very easily 'reproduced'.
Hopefully we'll get an update soon,
Addendum: I found a 3rd party app called 'Night Camera' it's free and there are three settings i) normal (as per usually settings ii) medium (this is a fair degree brighter and more than adequate for my purposes and iii) high - this is an in app purchase. I'm going to use this and see how I get on.
Kind regards
The last poster had the idea. I also found turning up brightness works a little to cure the issue with dark screen in video mode in dark areas. Also I believe that a class action suit would get apple to move on this issue. It seems thats what it takes now a days to get results. I spoke to a tech today and she said thats strange we have never heard of that issue before. EXCUSE ME! Maybe they need to look at the time stamps on these posts.
i have the same issue.
the image quality is great, but when switching to record a video - its very very dark!
i tried to change the exposure manually, but it seems like nothing is happening.
the video recording is pretty unusable that way.

You might want to have your phone checked out. I hadn't made a video on my iPhone 6, but to see if there was a dark issue, I just made one and there was no issue whatsoever.
Took some videos today and its looks great with day light and well lit locations . Seems like the problem occurs in low light situations. The camera is able to take in alot more light in photo mode vs video mode and it gets progressively worse with slow motion video.
WIsh I had another iphone 6 plus to test it against.

With a small lens, which is only 6 element, one can not expect great results in video mode in low light. You're just up against the limits of what a small lens can capture.
so you are saying that under the same light condition pictures will be (much) better than videos?
cause the video is darker than on my ipad air or iphone 5.
I don't know exactly what you're seeing. I'm simply saying video quality in low light won't be a good as picture quality in low light. If however, you think your phone is not working properly in regard to video, I'd recommend you to your Apple Genius Bar and have it checked.
This has to be some sort of software issue. My video is very dark thru the camera app, but I can get much brighter video from the same setting if I choose to make a video from messages. Hopefully they correct this fast.
I also have same problem, and here it's same, on my old iPhone 5 video is much brighter in indoors conditions.
Also, i noticed that if you turn 60 fps mode on, in few seconds when you start shooting video it will become even darker than in 30 fps (which is already too dark).
It appears under artificial lighting auto exposure doesn't work properly and makes video as dark as possible.
Also, manual exposure in this conditions either doesn't work at all (no matter how you move it picture stays same) or doesn't make difference.
ThyFuzz is spot on. I have the same situation. Very dark video through the camera app (even compared back to my old iPhone 4s) but much brighter when shooting video while in my iMessage app.
iPhone 6
I Have same problem. I cant record any video indoor. My old 4s better than iphone 6 plus indoor video quality.
If your video is not good, you need to schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar. The video recording on my iPhone 6 is as good if not better than any of my previous iPhone's. Yours should be as well.
I Agree and panorama is the same. It's so dark you can't make out anything but normal photo is bright/light!
