AFP vs SMB speed

Dear All,

We have a server running linux (RedHat) with netatalk (AFP) for sharing files.

We are thinking to move to Samba (SMB) so that Mac and Windows computers can see same files and we have only one sharing protocol enabled.

But when testing performance on Mac we are getting very slow on SMB. Copying big file (~500MB) over AFP is twice faster than over SMB.

Copying same file to same location on Windows is as fast as AFP on Mac.

Anyone any thought on why would this happen?

MAC's: 10.9 - fully patched

Windows: 7 - fully patched

Many Thanks,

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Not sure, but it was that way back in Tiger/10.4.x also, workaround there was to Use Terminal commands to mount SMB volumes & such.
