When I was finally able to free up some space on my iPad to do the ios 8 upgrade, it ask me for a four digit code
Its asking for the passcode you use to unlock your iPad when you turn it on. Only you know this passcode.
You would have initially entered this "Passcode" at some time in the past, when either setting it up or when you activated the Passcode on your iOS device. You'll have to remember what you entered when you did this. This is not something Apple "made up" but something you did and you would have entered it yourself.
