When i swipe down to enter search ipad feature the screen goes black. Any clues why?

It may help to close all open apps and restart your iPad.

iOS: Understanding multitasking

iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430

If the behavior continues, the next step would be to restore the device.

iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
