Phone shuts off with 30% or 40% battery life remaining

After updating my iPhone 5 to iOS 8, my phone shuts off before my battery gets to 1%. My battery will be at 30% or 40% and randomly shut off. When I plug my phone in to turn it on, the battery is still at 30% or 40%. I have also updated iOS 8.0.2 hoping it would fix the problem but nothing has changed. It seems like it is getting worse and that my phone is dying with more battery life. HELP!

First, follow Lyssa's advice. If that is not the problem either your battery is failing or the battery gauge requires recalibration. To do that run the battery all the way down until the phone shuts off at 1%. If it shuts off above 1% charge it for a minute or so, then continue running the battery down. Repeat until it gets to 1% before it shuts off. Then charge for 4 hours with the wall adapter. You may have to do this twice. After the 2nd time if the battery still shows this problem its time for a new battery.

Every time my iPhone 5 gets to around 30%, it will shut off WITHOUT warning. Yes I've restored it. Yes I've "reset all settings" it. Yes I've turned of umpteenth notifications, disabled Background App Refresh, reduced brightness setting, etc. and yet still this battery problem exists.

I even waiting for a month to upgrade from 7 to 8 because I knew of all the issues Apple was having with the first few releases of iOS 8. After almost 2 weeks of iOS 8 exposure, I'm ready to give it up. There are other problems I'm experiencing but the battery shutoff is the worse and it is unacceptable.

With all these issues I'm having, I'm less inclined to replace my iPhone 5 with a new 6 or 6 Plus. Apple, please get it together SOON already lest I become an ex-customer.

My iPhone 5s has the same issue. Usually about 40% it dies, especially if it's cold out. If I warm it back up, it comes back on but will randomly die anything below 45% really.

This is annoying as heck, especially if I'm out trying to take pictures. I've done everything possible to fix this and nothing.

I have no Apple stores near me so I'm screwed right now.

Forget all the stories of all these people who drag you to their sites just to make you read advertising or the ones from people who do not know anything but come up with anything, just because they have nothing else to do!

The answer is this: just uninstall all apps that you have installed just before your problem occured. Then check your issue to make sure there is no more issues. Then re-install your apps one by one, and check to find our which one was creating the problem. I can assure you that you will not be deceived by this fix.
