Q: iPhone restores and then goes right back into recovery mode

Overnight, my iPhone 4 went into recovery mode on its own.  I plugged it into iTunes, which detected a phone in recovery mode and asked if I wanted to restore it.  I went ahead and clicked restore and the phone went through the whole process.  I received a notice on my PC saying that the restore was complete and to wait until prompted to unplug my phone.  I never received a completed sign and the phone just goes back into recovery mode and I eventually get another notice saying that iTunes detected a phone in recovery mode.

Is there any hope for my phone or is it toast?

If you followed the instructions in the support document that you linked to the forum from, then you need to make an appointment at the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Provider and have the hardware checked.

Unfortunately, I don't live anywhere near an Apple store or Authorized Apple Service Provider which is why I posed the question.  I haven't been able to find any sort of similar posts where trying to restore the phone while in recovery mode doesn't work.

Who takes care of your Apple Service? It depends on where you are located. See this support document. Contact Apple for support and service Use that to contact your service for your location. The support document that you linked from provides all of the information on what to do if you cannot update or restore your device. If it will not restore, then you need to seek service.

No one does.  It's an iPhone 4.  Totally and completely out of warranty.  I use Straight Talk for my service carrier so I don't even have any sort of support from AT&T.

If I contact Apple, they will charge me $20 just to troubleshoot.  Hence me posting in the community.  I was hoping someone would have some further information that might assist me in determining whether there was any chance of getting the phone in working order again or if it is toast.

If the problem is hardware, like you indicated at first, it is most likely not even worth spending the money to have the hardware fixed (if even possible) because it is an iPhone 4, not under warranty, and pretty outdated.

Since you mention Straight Talk and AT&T, then you must be in the US. Apple is your support. Just because it is out of warranty doesn't mean they will not check it. If it is hardware, then you can just replace the device. If it is something else, maybe they can help. I would like to think it is software, but because you cannot seem to finish a recovery, I'm afraid the phone may be dying.
