I Have the exact problem with my iPad. It's driving me batty since I can't see what I'm tpying. It's nearly impossible to correct type-os since I can't put the cursor where I need it, as soon as I touch the area to place the cursor, the keyboard pops up and blocks the view. Please help!

This keyboard issue started on my iPad yesterday. Not only does the virtual keyboard cover half the screen but it won't disppear. I understand how to split the screen and dock and undock it. But the little keyboard icon does not close the virtual keyboard. I have a bluetooth keyboard that when on takes precedent, but I don't always want to use it. Anyone else having this issue?
Thank you, that was all I needed. The important point, as you stated, is to HOLD DOWN the little keyboard for a couple of seconds.
If the keyboard is up on the middle of the screen, but not split, and you want to move it back to the bottom - tap and hold down on the little keyboard and icon and select - Dock
You can turn the split keyboard off in Settings>General>Keyboard>Split Keyboard>Off.
Exactly the same problem for me ever since I updated gmail to v 5.0.170618, about a year ago. Made the mistake of thinking an update would mean an improvement - but it was worse than the earlier version. Practically unusable since the keyboard on screen covers the bottom third and the text being created is covered by the keyboard so you can not see it to type. It would be solved if the text scrolled up (and off) the screen.....but it doesn't. How is this an improvement? Beats me
On you iPad = Go to settings, general, keyboard and close split keyboard. This should fix it.
I agree... When I am typing with the keyboard "docked", all the text shows up above the keyboard. That's great. When I split the keyboard, which is my preferred use for faster thumb typing, the keyboard moves up about 1/4 of the screen and the text gets covered up by the split keyboard. It would be nice if the text moved up above the split keyboard so you can see what you are typing and make corrections as needed.
Right now, I can't see what I'm typing when using the split keyboard.
sorry, I can see what I'm typing, but I can't see the prior 1 or 2 message text bubbles. so, if I am responding to several points, I can't refer to them while typing because they are covered up.
Funny, as I was just playing with my iPad, I found that if I physically turn the iPad from landscape to portrait and then back to landscape, the text moves above the split keyboard.. It also does the same if you prefer working in portrait orientation, you turn the iPad to landscape and then back to portrait again and the text will be above the split keyboard..
Obviously, this is not the best way for this to function.... should be another "bug fix" in the making...
