How do I make a list of my keywords?

I would like to create a list of all the keywords I have created in iPhoto '11.

It's easy enough to get iPhoto to display a list of my keywords, and I can even Select them in Edit mode - but so far I have not found a way to Copy them (as text) so I can paste them into a text document. A screen shot is no good, I need text.

Any suggestions?

if a PDF document suffices and you are willing to invest a bit of work, you can use the following work-around:

 • Add a photo to your library, that you do not need for other purposes.
 • Show the "Manage My Keywords" panel and add all your keywords to this one photo by clicking each and every keyword button.
 • Then select the photo and use the command "File > Print" to open the Print panel.
 • Set the layout to "Contact Sheet". In the Contact Sheet panel set the colums to one column.
 • Click "Captions" to add keywords.
 • Then press the "Print" button and select the "PDF" option to print to a PDF document.

Now you can copy and paste the keywords from the PDF document to a text document.

If you have Aperture, you can open the iPhoto library in aperture and save the list of keywords as an XML document.

Inside the iPhoto Library package there's a file named Keywords.plist. Open the package as shown in this screenshot

and COPY the file to the Desktop. (Do not make any other changes to the contents of the package). Open the Keyword.plist file with a text editor, the free TextWrangler is a good one to use, and you can find and copy all of the keywords. They will be is this type of format

<dict>

<key>modelId</key>

<integer>56</integer>

<key>name</key>

<string>Toad's Family</string>

<key>uuid</key>

<string>ePiqD6dtQA+VTrDLOME6Fg</string>

</dict>

So you'll have some searching to do.

leonie,

Brilliant! The print-to-PDF option worked great!

The Aperture-XML option sounds like it might be even easier - IF - I can copy from the XML document. I don't know anything about XML - what software is used to view XML, and can I copy from it? Would the Keywords be contiguous text in the XML document, like a list, so I can select them all at once - or would each keyword be buried in other characters (like Old Toad's example), and require me to select and copy them one-at-a-time?

I don't have Aperture - or rather I do, but my trial version has expired - so I couldn't try that option today. I've been thinking about buying a license, and this might be one more reason to get out the credit card.

Thanks!

There is a way to get somewhat of a partial list of your photos that would look something like this and be easier to edit out the chat:

<rdf:li>animal</rdf:li>

<rdf:li>AR Before</rdf:li>

<rdf:li>Art & Jolene</rdf:li>

<rdf:li>Bells</rdf:li>

<rdf:li>Bill</rdf:li>

<rdf:li>Bill (Old Toad)</rdf:li>

<rdf:li>Birthday</rdf:li>

<rdf:li>Book</rdf:li>

<rdf:li>Chris</rdf:li>

<rdf:li>ColorChecker</rdf:li>

<rdf:li>Courtney</rdf:li>

<rdf:li>Derek</rdf:li>

<rdf:li>Edie</rdf:li>

<rdf:li>Extemded Family</rdf:li>

<rdf:li>Face</rdf:li>

<rdf:li>Family</rdf:li>

Here's how:

1 - select one photo as the keyword mule in your iPhoto library and add ALL of the keywords to it.

2 - export out of iPhoto with the following settings:

User uploaded file

3 - download the demo version of Media Pro 1.

4 - launch MP and drag the keyword mule file into the open window of MP.

5 - select the thumbnail

User uploaded file

and use the Action ➙ Export Annotations menu option.

User uploaded file

with these settings:

User uploaded file

That will create an .XMP file with the same name as the image file that, when opened with TextWrangler, will look like what I posted above. It should be easy to batch edit out the unneeded <rdf:li> and</rdf:li> with TextWrangler and give you want you need.

You're welcome 🙂

In Aperture 3.5.1, the current version, you would do the following:

 • From the main menu bar use the command "Window > Show Keywoords HUD"
 • At the bottom of the panel is a button "Export Keywords". Click it.

That will export a text file. I just checked. It is a simple text file "Keyword List.txt" like this, with each keyword on a separate line. Nested keywords will be shown indented by tabs:

Africa

Allas

Animals

Asia

Bird

BorderFX

Bridge

....

I can highly recommend Aperture 3.5.1, but you know, that Apple has stopped the development, don't you? There will be no further updates after the last update for compatibility with Yosemite.

Yes, I know there won't be any future development of Aperture beyond Yosemite. But that's not the reason I've changed my mind about buying it.

The fact that I've just recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion is proof that I'm not an early adapter. It will probably be a long time before I'll be migrating past Yosemite.

Apple says 10.9 is required to run Aperture 3.5. My trial version of Aperture is 3.4.5, which I believe is the latest version I can run under Lion, right?

So after looking at the Aperture revision history, and seeing all the problems solved by v.3.5 and 3.5.1 - problems I'd be stuck with in v.3.4.5 - I've about lost interest in Aperture. I'll probably continue to do my RAW conversions and editing in Photoshop Elements, and stick with iPhoto for organization until I can find something better.
