Q: Airplay from Mavericks to Apple TV lags or drops out

I'm trying to mirror the sound from Spotify, Safari, whatever from my Mbp retina with Mavericks to my Apple TV. I'm experiencing that the sound literally drops out for a couple of seconds from time to time. Some times it happens in barely 30 secs interval, while at other times it may stream without problems for several songs. This happens from my iPhone as well. All devices are connected through a 5GHz Time Capsule network. All software are updated. Any experience with fixing this?

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.

You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.

Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.

There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

    Thank you for your reply!

I've tried to install iStumbler, and there is no 5GHz network in range, except my own. The signal is quite strong with little noise. I also placed my mac, the Time Capsule and the Apple TV within some 3 feet distance, resulting in either marginally better, or no change in performance from the Airplay. I find it quite weird that neither of my applications has any trouble streaming from the internet, but the Apple TV seems to be unable to stream via Airplay.

Since I have no problem streaming videos from my mac to my Apple TV with Beamer, I tried to stream a Youtube video with Airplay. This yielded a similar problem to the one described above. Insane frame drop and sound problems from time to time.

5 Ghz has some advantages but it is also short range.
