is the flashlight safe to use/

Very Safe and Very Useful ...actually other Flashlight Apps are also Safe if they are purchased or downloaded from the App Store. But the included Flashlight works GREAT!

iOS has a built-in flashlight feature. Why do you need an app?

I think you may be thinking of Android apps. iPhone apps are only available through the App Store (unless you've jailbroken your phone) and are fairly well vetted. Also, because of the way the iOS isolates one app from the other, there really isn't any malware for an unjailbroken iOS device.

The only danger I can see from the built in flashlight feature is if you shine it in your (or someone else's) eye. It's very bright.

Now I'm confused. You were concerned the flashlight feature in iOS 8 was malware?

It seems unlikely that Apple would install malware in the guise of a flashlight on their own products, potentially doing great harm to their reputation. Again, I think you've heard stories about utility apps for Android phones that are malware in disguise. This is not true for iOS devices.

Just for the record the original question was very clear that you were asking about the Flashlight that is a feature within the iOS software. Your comment about "Apps" was indeed understood as secondary and again, the other Flashlight Apps available in the App Store are not Malware.
