How do I reduce the amount of music storage on my iPhone

I've got a 32G iPhone 4S with a 20 GB+ music library and about 3.5 GB of photos. I back up to my MBP. Would like to reduce the size of iTunes library to make room for other things - like the IOS 8.0.2 update (using 7.1.2)

Any suggestions? I assume I can reduce it to just playlists, but how do I go about this?

You can sync everything or selected playlists.
