Q: How to get Mavericks Printer/Scanner to recognize Canoscan Lide 500F

I have a Canon Canoscan Lide 500 F scanner that worked perfectly with OSX 10.7.5 but Mavericks says it isn't connected?  How do you get Mavericks to recognize USB devices that are connected?  How do I get this scanner working again?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9), Canon Canoscan Lide 500F

    Hi ..

According to Canon there are no drivers for youur printer/scanner for v10.9 Mavericks compatibility here.

But there is an alternative. You can scan using the pre installed Image Capture app located in your Applications folder.

Connect the scanner to your Mac whether Wi-Fi or USB.

Click the very small black box bottom left side of the Image Capture window.

You'll see this pop up menu:   Connecting this (device) opens:

You can select a default app to scan (Image Capture) and select a folder from the Import To pop up menu on the right to save scanned files to.

If you need help with the Image Capture software, click Help from the Image Capture menu bar.

    Thank You Carolyn,

It seems that although the Mavericks system recognizes the scanner, Apple has chosen not to allow it to be displayed by the Printer/Scanner Systems Preferences.  While it does show up in the Hardware scan, as you pointed out, the Image Capture program works fine with this scanner even though Apple has gone to the effort of frustrating their users by choosing to cloak it in System Preferences Printer/Scanner lists.

    Hi ..

It's not recognized in System Prefernces because Canon has not updated their drivers for v10.9 Mavericks compatibility. It's the printer/scanner model manufacture's responsibility to update their drivers, not Apple.

I'm glad Image Capture is working for you instead.
