Q: message issues (OS X 10.9.5 )

message app  :

Software : OS X 10.9.5 : processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Message application, not responding, requires force quit.

Any ideas on what may be causing this and how to fix it...

    Thanks for your response.

Prior to posting I have  restarted, shutdown and restarted many times, browsed online support to eliminate causes and came up with nothing.

More technical support than a restart required.

    Hi,

In that case open the Console app in Applications/Utilities and tell us the error type messages that appear when you try to launch it ?

Possibles include a missing or broken AppleGothic.ttf font

A missing Helvetica Font (although the System in general would complain more if this was missing).

    A missing Lucida Grande font.

The first is needed each time you login to iMessages.

The others are needed by the app to display windows properly.

Also if the Contacts App > My Card (See card menu) is not your details then you can have issues.

    Hi,

I am having the same issue - since the 10.9.5 update my Messages won't open. It just hangs. In the console window the error is:

    Screen Shot 2014-10-06 at 3.12.56 PM.png

I also have the hang report if you need. Does Apple have a fix for this problem, seeing that they are BOTH Apple solutions?

I think i may have self solved it.

It appears to be an issue with Bonjour, or lack of.

    Hi,

Apple rarely say one way or another whether there is a known issue or not - right up to the point where they either issue a fix or issue a Help Doc to allow users to work though know "fixes"

This is one such Doc FaceTime, Game Center, Messages: Troubleshooting sign in issues

The iMessages account is the one helped by the SOAgent app which runs the SOAccountHelper and needs the AppleGothic.ttf Font to be present and working.

    Have you checked this ?
