mms and visual voicemail don't work when connected to wifi

iphone6, ios 8.0.2, tmobile (california), uverse (home internet)

I've noticed that i cannot send/receive mms (pictures) and visual voicemail notifications don't come through when connected to my home wifi (att uverse). I have not tried other wifi networks, but my home network didn't have this issue with my old iphone 4 a month ago. i have imessage disabled.

if i turn off wifi on the phone, mms will send, and after a while i will even start receiving old mms messages from when wifi was on. I also tried a network reset, and after the reboot, i got 8 mms from yesterday, and a visual voicemail from 2 days ago. after i reconnected to my wifi, mms didn't work again.

again, mms/vvm are fine on the tmobile network, it is only with wifi enabled that it stops working. hard reset also didn't change the behaviour.

Are you turning off cellular data when you connect to WiFi? If so, that's your problem. Both MMS and visual voice mail require a cellular data connection. Simply connecting to a WiFi network without intentionally turning off cellular data should not cause it to behave this way.

I should also note that my home wifi does not appear to have any obvious connectivity problems. web browsing, netflix, etc all work just fine.

i do not touch my cellular settings at all; just turn wifi on and off.

in fact, i don't even need to explicitly turn wifi on and off for this to change-- i just walk far enough away from home, the wifi drops, and mms works.

It might have something to do with WiFi calling on T-Mobile. I don't have T-Mobile, so I can't experiment. What's happening is definitely not right, though. Try Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings. See if that corrects it.

yes, as i've said, i turn off wifi, mms and vvm work just fine.

At this point, I'd have to say back it up using iTunes, Restore iOS and set it up as a new phone. See if it works or if it still behaves the same.

If it behaves the same, make an appointment at the genius bar. That's definitely not right.

If it does work correctly, restore your backup. See if the problem returns. If it does, then the problem is also contained in your backup. Set it up as new and re-sync your data, media and apps.

Does everything work as expected if you're on wifi elsewhere, like at work or at a coffee shop with wifi?

Have not tried other wifi's yet. That's top of my list to do. My home wifi was fine with my old iphone 4 a month ago, so I doubt it's my wifi, but that's clearly a major possibility.

Just like I told the apple rep on a support chat, backup/restore is just way too big a chunk of time for groping in the dark. I just set this guy up 2 weeks ago.
