Most of the paid "unlock" systems are scams that attempt to jailbreak your phone. The only supported method of unlocking is through the mobile operator.
That said, "activation" is a normal part of the setup process.
TThanks for your help, but I am trying to change from vodafone to EE. vodafone won,t help with the unlocking, so I went to a shop, who unlocked it with apple. They,re saying it is, but when I put the EE som card in the activation screen comes up and I can,t get any further as iti saying the phone is locked.
What reason did Vodafone give for not helping. The only reasons should be an outstanding unpaid balance or you have not yet completed your contractual obligations.
In either case, you wasted your money and still need to go through Vodafone for unlocking.

When you are on a carrier that has a policy of not unlocking the iPhone you have two options: stay with that carrier or sell the iPhone. Jailbreaking is not an option as doing so voids ALL support from Apple, including help on these discussions per the Terms of Use.
You will need to deal with the shop that tried to jailbreak your iPhone. Also be aware that should you ever try to upgrade the iOS, the iPhone will lockup and be unusable after it is jailbroken.
HHi, vodafone said they couldn't help because I was not the original purchaser of the phone. The shop run a fraud check which was ok.
OK, but you still have to deal with Vodafone as that is the carrier the iPhone is locked to. Simply doing a fraud or theft check does not satisfy the Apple License Agreement and Terms of Use for the devoice, they are both very explicit that hacking or jailbreaking or altering the physical characteristics of the device void all support and service.
There just isn't anything anyone on here can do to rectify the situation.
TThanks, yes the shop are saying they did contact Vodafone, and then they just said it was unlocked, but they didn't say that Vodafone had done it. I need to get back to he shop tomorrow and find out exactly what Vodafone said. Thanks all for your help.
You are very welcome, Alice...best of luck getting this resolved to your satisfaction.
