Q: my mac is slow but I have lots of disc space available

I have a very sluggish Mac. Is there anything I can do to speed it up? It seems to have slowed down after loading Lightroom and Photoshop. I have tried emptying the trash but that didn't help.

Model Name: iMac

Software: OS X Version 10.9.5

Processor: 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory: 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

L3 Cache: 6 MB

Physical Memory: 4.00 GB

Memory Used: 3.99 GB

Virtual Memory: 15.14 GB

Swap Used: 3.3 GB

I am using very little of the 4 GBs available.

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)
