Oct 5, 2014 10:51 AM in response to RebeccaC17by Network 23,★HelpfulUpgrading to iOS 8 is not designed to erase anything (with one exception below). It should be safe. However...
It doesn't matter what you are upgrading on whatever brand of computer or phone you have. You should always always always make a backup of that device before a major upgrade. You can easily back up your iPhone in iTunes, so just take a few minutes to do that first and then you won't have anything to fear in case something goes wrong with the iOS 8 upgrade. If something goes wrong you can just use iTunes to Restore from the last backup. As long as you made that last backup.
The one thing you will lose in iOS 8 is if you were specifically using the iPhoto app on your iPhone in iOS 7. You won't lose the photos themselves, but you will lose work done in iPhoto like slideshows and albums. Note that this is about the iPhoto app specifically, which is a separate purchase, it is not about the Photos app that comes with every iPhone. For example, I never did install the iPhotos app on my iPhone so I'm not affected. This does not affect iPhoto on the Mac.
Also, when it asks you if you want to upgrade to iCloud Drive, say "no" for now.
