How do I open a spreadsheet in Libre Office?

I have a new iMac with Maverick 10.9.5, and downloaded Libre Office 4.3.1.2

I want to download spreadsheets from a government website, and always open in Libre Office.

I don't want to download in Numbers, export to excel, and export again to Libre Office.

Where is a setting to "always use Libre Office"?

If I single-click the downloaded spreadsheet, then right-click, "open with" and hit Libre Office, then it appears as a spreadsheet, but crashes when I try to sort the columns.

Hi Naikosen, I've just downloaded a big spreadsheet from a Government site, it came with the extension .xls.xlsx, and the menu bar said "Numbers".

I said "get info" and it said it was in LibreOffice.app

Message comes up : "Electricity.xls.xlsx" can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer. Your security preferences allow istakation of only apps from the Mad App Store and identified developers.

what next?
