Q: Ipad 3 iOS 8 volume control gone

Most of system muted.  Volume control gone unless I plug in a headphone jack.  I have checked side switch.  I have checked system side switch settings, switched and tested. Still no joy.  I reset all system settings. no joy.  Several strange elements. When I set side switch to mute function and use it, it says "ringer". As if I'm only changing my phones ringer volume. of course this is an ipad.   the second is the disappearance of vome cotroll when I plug in a headphone/speaker jack.  the third,  the only time I get sound anymore is when using my ipads timer or alarm.
