unknown caller id issue with AT&T iphone 6

anyone having an issue receiving calls on their AT&T iphone6 and the caller id says "unknown"?

iPhone 6, iOS 8

I received my i AT&T iPhone 6 on Sept. 19, 2014. Within a few days I started getting UNKNOWN on my caller ID. I spent close to 6 - 8 hours on the phone with Apple and AT&T....no one knew or could fix the problem. So I went to an AT&T store to tell them that I was returning the iPhone. They wanted a chance to fix it....so after sitting there for 2 and a half hours it was the same end result.....calls coming in as UNKNOWN. I handed them back the iPhone 6.


I then got an un-locked T Mobile iPhone 6 and was having the same problem. I have now spent numerous hours on the phone with Apple and AT&T.....no solution to this problem. I now realize it's an AT&T problem....which they don't give a dam* about.


Was given a case # on Oct 14, 2012 and David from AT&T assured me and the Apple Tech ( the 3 of us were conference in ) I would get a phone call back within 24 hours. Right after that call I then received a text and email stating 5 days. I waited the 5 days and nothing so I called AT&T was told David ( AT&T Tech ) had till 4:25 PM to call me.....still waiting.


Last Saturday Oct 18, 2014 Apple Tech called me to see if I heard back from AT&T. Told him no so he called AT&T...all 3 of us were on the phone. Was told by the AT&T rep that he couldn't discuss my case and have to wait till the original person that opened my case ( AT&T Tech David ) called me....unbelievable!!!


I then got a phone call from an AT&T tech on Mon Oct 20, 2014 ....he said it was definitely AT&T problem. Something to do with PBX lines that are coming in as UNKNOWN do to AT&T trying to push the VoLTE.


I have now been going back and forth trying to decide whether I want a new carrier....

Maybe good news...all my calls that have been coming up UNKNOWN ( from doctors ) may now have been resolved. Today I received a phone call from one of my doctors and it actually came up with his name.


I did put in my contacts this way -

1+(xxx)-xxx-xxxx

1(xxx)-xxx-xxxx

(xxx)-xxx-xxxx

This Saturday I'll be receiving a phone call from an Apple Tech ( he checks in with me for any progress on AT&T's side ).....he also comes up UNKNOWN. I only have his # listed (xxx)-xxx-xxxx.

So if he comes in as his name and number is programmed into my iPhone....then AT&T must have figured it out.

Will report back on Saturday.....

I don't know if mine finally came thru with a name because of having 3 same numbers but different ways of adding them in my contacts ( all under mobile ) displayed this way . All the x's are the exact number

(xxx)-xxx-xxxx

I only have (xxx)-xxx-xxxx for Apple tech so if he comes up UNKNOWN then I'll add the +1 and 1 in front of his number and I'll have him call me back to see if his name shows up on caller id.

I have my doctors in my contacts....all have been coming up UNKNOWN ( sent snapshots to Apple for them to check it out ). But today instead of UNKNOWN coming in it actually showed the doctor's name.


I never had a problem on any other of my iPhones ( 3G, 4 and 5 ). VoLTE seems to be the problem which is being tested in my area. I think that's why this has not become a bigger issue if it was sent out to all areas.


My iPhone 5 is still active and Apple tech called and the number showed up....but not on my iPhone 6.


Even UNKNOWN never had a phone # listed under it.


When I talked to AT&T they could see every number showing. I told them date and time every UNKNOWN # that I got and still they could see the number.

Both my husband and myself have IPHONE6's. What we did was go to settings, cellular, enable LTE, and change the checkmark from voice and data to just data. Apparently, VOLTE is not working with these phones the way it should. This is fairly new and I'm leaving my checkmark on data until I think that they have fixed this issue. We tested this and the numbers came in instead of unknown so I know that this is what the issue is.

To the original poster...yes, this is a very real problem.


It's a carrier side issue that the owners of those devices need to address with their carrier, unless they have enabled that option on their own device. It's either a setting on the device or a function of the carrier.


Settings > Phone > Show Caller ID is the only place on the iPhone itself that's controlled. If they have that enabled, and it still shows unknown caller on another phone when they call, it's a carrier issue.

After spending numerous hours on the phone with Apple and AT&T I have discovered it's AT&T' that's causing the problem. I'm on my second iPhone 6 thinking it was the iPhone 6 itself but still have the UNKNOWN incoming calls coming in.


I was called by an AT&T tech last Monday....he was trying to mimic the UNKNOWN incoming call but after 3 tries they all came with his 3's showing. I was told that the issue was AT&T VoLTE that they are testing out in the Chicago areas. Now have been reading that Verizon is also experiencing the same issue testing in the Minneapolis area ( calls coming up UNKNOWN ).


I thought I had a solution by entering the same 3 numbers using +1 before area code, 1 before area and ( area code )....it worked for a doctor that was showing up UNKNOWN. But that changed today....Apple tech called me to see if there was any progress made on the UNKNOWN issue....his calls have always been UNKNOWN and today came up UNKNOWN ( had his # 3 ways in my contacts ).


Very frustrated with AT&T....given a case # and was told that within 5 days they would respond back. That case was opened 14 days ago and am still waiting to hear what's going on. Even called AT&T gave them my case # and was told by the tech since he didn't open the case he can't tell me what's going on.

Look for the posting under Charhol and try changing the phone settings under cellular, enable LTE, and change the check mark from voice and data to data only. This worked for us. The voice piece won't be sent out over LTE. The other option would be to have this turned off on your line by the carrier. VOLTE apparently is working the way it should with these phones.

I can confirm that changing the LTE settings to data only does not resolve the problem on my iPhone 6 or any of my colleagues'. As for having the VoLTE turned off by the carrier, we inquired about that with AT&T and were told that that "feature" is attached to all lines with an iPhone 6 and their system doesn't allow for its removal.
