Q: How many VMs on a Mac Mini Server with 16GB of ram?
So, as many people here, I am part of an IT department at a school and we need to use multiple VPP tokens simultaneously. We have a Macbook (2009) acting as a server/MDM for our ipads. But swapping between VPP tokens is not an ideal situation. I've looked into 3rd party MDM solutions and I'm not overly happy with either the price or the cloud based model so I'd like to keep using Apple.
The only solution I can come up with is to have multiple servers, one for each VPP. We only need 7 so it's not nearly as bad as others have it. We have a VM farm but it's all on Dell servers, which is against apple license agreement so I'm looking for apple hardware.
I looked at two options (the only two) a Mac Mini Server and a Mac Pro.
At 2GB of RAM for each OS, the Mac Mini would work at 16 GB of RAM but I'm not sure how long it would last before I needed more RAM than I could put in. I'm also not even sure it could handle 6 VMs. So I figured I'd ask here.
The Mac Pro should be able to handle it without an issue (lots of RAM) but I'd rather not spend the money if the mac mini will do the job just fine.
Though I am open to other solutions.
MacBook, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)
