Lots of mail issues since last Mountain Lion update

Since the last update to Mountain Lion, just a couple of days ago, my mail has gone completely haywire, and I can't figure out why.

First of all, my Mail App on my mid-2010 27" iMac won't get mail anymore. I have to close mail and reopen it every single time to see if I have email, which is quite convenient when you're waiting on replies to something. If I have my iPhone nearby, mail will show up there -- but not on the desktop.

Secondly, my iPhone WAS NOT upgraded to IOS8 (nor will it be!) -- the software was downloaded (against my wishes) and it is just sitting there with a comment that there's not enough memory to install it. So no upgrade on the iPhone -- yet, when I send a photo from my phone to my gmail account, it automatically sends it to my iCloud address -- which is NOT what I want, and it doesn't show up in my Mail App on the iMac! I made no other updates to my phone -- just an upgrade to Mountain Lion on the iMac. Previously, I could take an iPhone photo, mail it to myself, and it would come to my desktop where I could save it there. Now it won't do that. And I didn't make any changes to it. No matter how much I try and change things to get rid of the stupid cloud address, it will not send to my gmail account anymore, and thereby won't end up on my desktop iMac.

This is making things very unusable! Has anyone else had issues, and does anyone have any work-arounds?

Gmail is the provider -- was working fine before this -- I have changed nothing in that setup or config

Account is IMAP with POP enabled -- again, no change

Connection Doctor shows all lights green.

Mail is pulled just fine when the Mail app is closed and then reopened. But once reopened, it will not pull mail. The activity window says that it is, but nothing shows up, so I have to go into gmail from a web browser.

Just spent several hours on the phone with an Apple rep, and we did everything right down to rebuilding the mailbox and deleting and re-adding the gmail account, and nothing is working. His best guess is that it's a stuck email somewhere in gmail, but there's nothing that I can see. There's nothing in the outbox, no spam or trash that hasn't been deleted. Next course of action recommended was to (a) install Mavericks, upgrading from Mountain Lion; and then if that doesn't help it, (b) contact Google Support.

I think this issue is similar to whats happening to my computer and sounds just like this problem: Gmail not automatically being downloaded in MAIL

This seems to be a glitch either in the security update that was pushed out a few days ago or a change in gmail servers.

I really need a fix for this. I got mad at someone today who kept saying they had sent an email but I wasn't getting it. I then quit my email program and launched it again and the emails came in without a hitch. I never got any more until I quit and launched again. VERY frustrating.

This is EXACTLY the issue I have and posted today: Gmail not automatically being downloaded in MAIL

I do NOT want to upgrade to Mavericks and am waiting for Yosemite--- who to contact at APPLE to get them to do another update to Mountain Lion -- actually I did not think there WAS an update--- was it an update via the Apple (Mac) Store for MAIL or ????

I will direct my post above to this post ---

I do NOT have problems getting eMails from my company eMail (thank goodness!) nor any issues with @icloud.com, @mac.com or even an old @skynet.be eMail account - they all come in automatically--- BUT NOT GMAILs--- The workaround (quit Mail and restart or take off-line and then on-line) needs a script we can run in the interim!

About 3 years ago I made the switch to Gmail for my main mail and really need that to work with Apple MAIL.

Who can we contact at APPLE and how?

Please keep this discussion active and don't close it until we get this back the way it was. BTW: I only notices this on Monday about 3 pm CDT. When was the "upgrade"-- can anyone remember what it was and when? Also: Anyway to download a previous version of MAIL (if that's the issue)? I did a quick search and don't see it anywhere…

Keep posting any updates-- thanks,

Steve

I checked my mid-August 2014 backup (SuperDuper!)-- but that version of MAIL is 6.6 as well. Was the "upgrade" that caused this related to MAIL directly or was it a security update?

OK it seems someone is suggesting a security update problem---- I don't believe it is a Gmail issue per se as Gmail downloads automatically to my iPad and iPhone 5 -- both running iOS 7.1.

OK any additional information or suggestions appreciated.

Great comments and thanks.

If it is a Gmail issue - then it does not affect iPads and iPhones running iOS 7.1--- but yes, I suppose it could be Gmail related -- that was my first set of searches to see if there were any issues with Gmail yesterday-- but when I saw everything fine on the gmail www site and with my iPhone & iPad…

Really would like to resolve this asap---

Thanks again,

Steve

Gmail issue: I agree that if it is a Google issue it was a small change only affecting OS X and not iOS. Oh, and I'm on iOS 8 and its not affecting that either.

I tried to set up a chat with Apple support but my Applecare is expired on all my machines at this point. I hate it when I seldom if ever need help and when I do its almost always a "system wide" issue that somebody needs to know about but they want to charge me to be the one that tells them.

Only good side of this is that I might get in the habit of closing my email more often and getting actual work done. ;-)
