Q: Lots of mail issues since last Mountain Lion update

Since the last update to Mountain Lion, just a couple of days ago, my mail has gone completely haywire, and I can't figure out why.

First of all, my Mail App on my mid-2010 27" iMac won't get mail anymore.  I have to close mail and reopen it every single time to see if I have email, which is quite convenient when you're waiting on replies to something.  If I have my iPhone nearby, mail will show up there -- but not on the desktop.

Secondly, my iPhone WAS NOT upgraded to IOS8 (nor will it be!) -- the software was downloaded (against my wishes) and it is just sitting there with a comment that there's not enough memory to install it.     So no upgrade on the iPhone -- yet, when I send a photo from my phone to my gmail account, it automatically sends it to my iCloud address -- which is NOT what I want, and it doesn't show up in my Mail App on the iMac!   I made no other updates to my phone -- just an upgrade to Mountain Lion on the iMac.   Previously, I could take an iPhone photo, mail it to myself, and it would come to my desktop where I could save it there.  Now it won't do that.  And I didn't make any changes to it.   No matter how much I try and change things to get rid of the stupid cloud address, it will not send to my gmail account anymore, and thereby won't end up on my desktop iMac.

This is making things very unusable!    Has anyone else had issues, and does anyone have any work-arounds?

    @Stephen

    Did you restart Mail? I found 6 messages in my Inbox on Mail and 10 on the Gmail web page. A restart fixed that.

    If you still have a discrepancy with your Sent mailbox, highlight it and go to the menu item Mailbox -> Rebuild (it's a non-destructive process - it should just go through all the messages that it has downloaded and re-index them to check it knows about all of them and what their correct status/flags are).

    I just did that--- but still only have 6 eMails in my gMail SENT box.

    Just did another send test and it worked fine (i.e. I got the notification and the eM in my normal IN Box)

    But wonder why the SEND box is only the latest 6 messages--- I've saved the 1800+ to my hard drive so I have them and they are on the Gmail server-- but still wonder why they did not get restored to the SENT box---

    Just shows you how important it is to back up, back up, back up.  SuperDuper! only costs $30 but I'd pay $3,000 for it!  It's saved me more than that the pas 10 years or so…

    Hey Stephen Google said you may need to quit and restart Mail for changes to take effect.

    Sorry, I see you have restarted Mail.

    I did not have to do this but others may need to.

    Also there was a Google Software update that I needed to allow through my firewall when I started up my computer early today.

    Don't know what the Google software update was for, could have been for any number of google plus services, or google idrive or google maps who know everything that google downloads and takes from our computers and other devices anymore.

    thanks-- it only rebuilt the 6 messages there --- it didn't add any.

    I think I can add them manually by taking saved messages and copying them to that folder but since I know where they are, if I need them I'll go fetch them myself --- or search will find them.

    Thanks very very much to you and Randy and everyone here.

    I haven't had that issue, mine seems to be working okay -- but I did just restart my laptop (and of course the mail app along with everything else) after the fix was announced.  I'm going to keep an eye on it though.  In the meantime, I think I'm going to look into SuperDuper.

    If the messages are on the server but not in Mail, you could do a re-sync. This will go through every single email in your Gmail account on the mail server and check that it's mirrored in Apple Mail. It takes a while if you have a lot of messages but should sort the problem.

    Highlight your mail account Inbox, right-click on it and select Synchronize "<account name>".

    It's an excellent product. I can second Steve's recommendation.

    Perhaps the SENT folder on my Mac is only for eMails sent from Gmail on my mac?  That is, if I create and send a gmail from my iPhone or iPad- it appears in the GMAIL send folder -- but perhaps it does not appear in the SEND folder "at the top" i.e. the one equivalent to the main IN BOX but the SEND Box if you get my drift.

    I never really checked that before-- just expected that everything sent from anywhere appeared in that top level SEND Box, but maybe not…

    The fact that it only has the last 6 messages sent-- that is weird but I have the others in the GMAIL web site (server) and now on my HD and soon on about 3 other FW800 HD's via SuperDuper…

    But always keep a 2-6 month old backup-- you sometimes junk a file you want then back up right away and then it is gone forever!

    Best regards,

    @Steve

    Ah... you have 2 Sent folders...?

    If you look in the folders list in the left column, under the name of the account (the part below the Inbox/Trash/etc section), you should see a folder called [Gmail]. Click the disclosure arrow to the left of that. Do you see a Sent folder nested inside it? If so, does it have all your Gmail sent emails in it? (the ones you see in Sent on the Gmail web page).

    If that's the case, Apple Mail has got confused about which folder it's supposed to store your Gmail Sent items in. Highlight the [Gmail]/Sent folder and go to the menu Mailbox -> Use this Mailbox For -> Sent.

    Also check Mail Preferences -> Accounts -> Mailbox Behaviours and make sure there is a tick against "Store sent messages on the server".

    You're welcome. Glad to hear that fixed it - it's quite a common problem with Apple Mail and Gmail

    Drive carefully!
