Lightning Digital AV Adapter not charging iPad Mini Retina

Hello all.

Every Sunday, I fire up my iPad and use the Lightning Digital AV adapter to hook it up to my Pioneer receiver via HDMI to watch football. This has been working well back to the old days of my iPad2 (although I used to use the 30-pin version of the same adapter). With my old iPad and the old adapter, I had no issues with the receiver's USB port (2.1amp) charging the iPad while it was playing video through the HDMI connection.

However, either since I got my new iPad mini or since I updated to iOS8 (unfortunately, I cannot remember which), the iPad no longer charges. If I bypass the AV adapter, and just plug the charging cable into the iPad (from the same port in the A/V receiver), it charges. However, if I plug the same charging cable into the adapter and then plug the adapter into the iPad, it does not charge. I have tried swapping the adapter for a new one and the problem is still happening.

I have no issues with the HDMI portion of the adapter, but for whatever reason, it will not charge the ipad.

Any help with this? Anything else I can try? Thanks!

Hey there. I believe I have figured out the problem, and the adapter was NOT the problem. The USB charging port on my A/V receiver is not of sufficient voltage to charge the iPad or even my new iPhone 6. If i plug the USB cable into a wall outlet, it works, but it will not work through my receiver. I know this was an issue with a lot of the newer apple devices, as they are now requiring more charging power than the previous versions. Hope this helps!

Except I only use the charger provided by Apple. No matter what I do I can't seem to get mine to work. I think mine may just be defective. The power adaptor supplied by Apple allows the phone to receive 1 amp at 5 volts, where a computer (receiver) may only allow a device to use 500 mA.

Are you perhaps using an iPod/iPhone charger (1A, 5W) to charge an iPad (2A, 10W required)?
