Q: iMac running Mavericks 10.9.5; very slow, sluggish, apps freeze, mail is almost useless (gmail imap).  Here are the results from etrecheck:EtreCheck version: 1.9.15 (52) Report generated October 7, 2014 at 1:12:49 PM PDT  Hardwa

My iMac has been sluggish for a long time; finally got around to posting here for help!

I've tried using Onyx to clean it up and it helped a little, but it seems as if everything freezes up and forget about mail; I use apple mail with gmail (google docs) and it is constantly indexing, etc. I need to use the web browser to answer email and it's just not what I want from apple.

Please help!

Thanks

You don't have enough RAM installed for everything  you are running concurrently. Either unload several applications or remove some of your third-party add-ons to reduce your memory usage footprint. Other things you can try to mitigate the matter:

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:

    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM

        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the

COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the

computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager

screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

Reinstall the 10.9.5 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.5 Update (Combo).

    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Reinstall the 10.9.5 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.5 Update (Combo).

Thanks for your quick reply; which applications/add-ons are sucking up the RAM; how much RAM do I need?  I've tried the others steps in the past all to no avail.  Maybe I just need more RAM?

Quit all applications. Since I don't know what third-party add-ons you absolutely require I can't tell you what to remove or disable. You will find all the information listed in your report which you should have read through. An alternative may be to create a new admin user account, set the new account for auto-login, then restart the computer. This should start you fresh without anything being loaded during startup.

You can observe your memory situation by using Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. It will also show you information on your CPU usage. You can determine then if the computer seems to be running normally. If it is, then your problem is related to something you're loading up at startup or something in your Home folder.

In order to answer that question you have to look over Activity Monitor and see for yourself. You can learn how to use Activity Monitor in Apple's article called Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory and determine how much RAM is being used (OS X Mountain Lion and earlier)

Thank you; I think it is chrome; whenever I run the cpu monitor it seems as if there are a lot of processes running.  maybe i need to stick with safari only.

You really should consider upgrading the RAM, your machine can accommodate 32GB of RAM, if you do decide to go that route most experienced users on these forums recommend OWC (www.macsales.com) or Crucial due to their reliability, service and competitive prices.

Safari is a good choice. Chrome has always been a problem from excessive memory usage to kernel panics. But using Safari will not make a big dent. You have lots of items running that eat up memory. Activity Monitor can show you which ones that you use versus the system. You don't want to mess with system processes unless they show up in red in the AM list.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

    Thanks for your reply,

When I click clear display everything disappears! What do you mean by "take one of the actions you're having trouble with"?

Any action that you feel is slower than it should be. Post the messages that appear in the initially empty Console window, if any.

As for needing more memory, you can easily determine whether that's the case. The relevant measure of whether memory is in short supply is what Apple calls "memory pressure."

Apple's explanation of memory pressure is here. If you want a more detailed, technical description, see here.
