Reseting Airport Extreme network extenders after replacing base station

I recently replaced my extreme base, I was able to install the new one and get a green light, but I have two extenders which continue to blink amber and the wifi extension is dead. I cannot see the extenders on my airport utility software.

I have tried a number of ways to reset them , I cannot see them on any application software so my options appear to be the reset button and plug cord - what is the proper procedure for resetting them. Is there a certain time to press the reset button, in conjunction with plugging it back in - I have tried various approaches. Without any way to communicate with these its been frustrating.

What extenders do you have? Are these Apple products? What model number?

If you have Apple AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme devices, you can perform a factory default reset as follows:

Power off the AirPort device for a few minutes

Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it in for another 8-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the AirPort

Release the reset button after the hold period, and allow a full minute for the AirPort to restart to a slow, blinking amber light

The AirPort has now been reset and can now be reconfigured again.

If you have an iPhone or iPad handy

Start on the home screen

Tap on Settings

Tap on WiFi

Tap on AirPort under the setting to Setup a New AirPort Base Station

The utility will guide you through the setup

Yes they are Apple products - bought at the same time as the first base station. Best I can see with a magnifying glass it looks like model 1392 - I tried all the reset process as you described - the disk seems to flash correctly but my airport utility does not see it. Their are a my ipad, I phone, desktop computer and printer showing on the app - so it looks like its working. I wonder if the unit is defective? My base dies after a heavy storm - even on a UPS the base stopped working. The extenders were plugged in around the house - nothing else seems effected , home theater, computer work stations, ham radio - nothing. How do I know if these unit (white hockey puck) are working.

A full factory default reset is difficult to do, since you almost need to have 3 hands to do it properly.

Try a "hard reset" as follows:

Power up an AirPort Express for a few minutes

Hold in the reset button on the back of the Express for 8-10 seconds and release

Allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light

On the iPad home screen, tap Settings

Tap WiFi

Look carefully for a heading of Set Up a New AirPort Base Station

Tap on AirPort Express just below that heading

If the Express is operating correctly, the utility will see it and walk you through the setup

If you continue to have difficulty after you try this several times, I would suggest that you take the AirPort Express devices to an Apple Store....if you have one near you....or contact Apple Support directly for more assistance.
