    iOS version?

email provider(s)? - no email addys

what might have changed on your iPad just before this started? add/update software?

are you able to check email from another device or desktop from the same email accounts?

your iPhone will be your friend in this case. It is working fine with the same iOS 8.0.2 update, right?

Did you set the iDevices up for Mail in the beginning? If not, who did? Handy to help?

When you check your mail, what exactly happens? error message? if so, what exactly does it say?

can you SEND emails from the iPad? from both AOL and gMail accounts?

Since I am iDevice deficient, I can't tell you - Tap this, then tap that, but what you want to do is:

on your iPhone == Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendar, > Accounts > either your AOL or gMail account (you will do both)

same thing on the iPad = then make all the settings MATCH your iPhone settings

TEST check mail for that account - if it works - repeat for the other account

If NO JOY, try Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendar, > Add Account for one at a time, as both AOL and gMail should be almost automatic setups.

I will ask my friend bobseufert to look in on this thread as he uses an iPad all the time

    luck

Are you on a different connection? Sometimes I have experienced certain hotspots that my mail (yahoo in this case) simply refuses to work with. So if it a new connection or hotspot that may be your issue (and it resolves itself as soon as you use a different connection. or you can use webmail to access your mail - in my case yahoo.com via safari)

have you tried to force quit your mail app? Double tap the home button, flick the preview for the mail app up and off the screen, single tap the home button to exit the mode then try again.

You may have tried this, but go into the settings, mail, contacts and calendars and delete your mail account, then re-add your info. Sometimes the iOS update futzes things up and starting over is the only real way to resolve it.

Lots of good suggestions in this discussion but one other thing to try .... If this problem is only occurring when using your home WiFi network, try rebooting your router as well. Unplug it for about 30 seconds and then plug it back in again.

And did you reboot like this?

Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

Here comes the cavalry!! Just go slow and methodical. Try whatever seems easiest for you first.

To the cavalry... iPhone works (iOS unreported so far but my bet is if one was then the other was updated) - so, my guess was update affected iPad differently somehow and could be corrected - I've heard about arbitrary settings changes. Gotta just love the new Apple.

    hang in there,Ej

I never updated my iphone 4 to ios 8 because it says I don't have enough GB of storage, which I take as a good sign since it has saved me form further aggravation. I can acquire my email via Chrome on the ipad but still nothing on the email app. I don't believe there is any problem with my wifi here since everything else works and shutting off wifi on the ipad and just using cellular doesn't work either.

I have tried resetting the ipad numerous times, if it was the wifi then I should be able to get email via cellular but that isn't working either. I can get email using Chrome on the ipad so it's something in the Mail app itself.....

Maybe it is a glitch in the mail app, and maybe it's not. You will never know if resetting the router will help if you don't try it.  You don't seem to be getting anywhere with what you have already tried.

I'll will definitely reset the router. It sounds like the only thing left is to restore the thing...not thrilled about that but I do back it up every so often.

Restoring is a little bit of a pain. But if you backup, you should be OK when all is said and done. It just takes a good bit of time especially if you have a lot of content on the iPad.

There is one other thing that I thought had already been suggested but after re-reading, I don think you have tried it yet. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings. You will not lose any data, but most of your device settings will have to be entered again, like wallpaper. Wifi network passwords, privacy settings and so on.

    Ej et al

Let's summarize what we know and have concluded...

    1. iOS 8.0.2(?) update yesterday AM [after last Mail joy anyway] = culprit
    2. all other aspects of home network and other devices working normally = not culprit -- iOS 8 install or update cannot address Wi-FI router or other devices' who are all having continued joy
    3. still no joy in cellular mode on the iPad iOS 8 Mail = culprit is isolated to iPad / iOS 8 Mail.app
    4. I have read where iOS 8 (or the update) has reset any number of user settings according to its own judgement = no number or types of resets of iPad will make any difference and in fact do not bring joy
    5. the suggestions I made early on have not been tried = copy account settings or create NEW versions of the accounts

    Simple tests

    1. go to Google in Safari, perform search - if joy
    2. create a NEW version of your gMail account in Mail(iOS8) = easy as picking the Google icon in the process

Add an email account on your iOS device

K.I.S.S. is always a good starting point. Occam's Razor sez the solution with the least number of variables is LIKELY  the answer
