Q: Why can't my iMac connect to 5GHz network with WPA2 password?

I have a 2008 iMac running OS X 10.9.4.

It refuses to connect to a 5GHz router unless I disable the WPA2 password (i.e., leave the network open). I get the wifi icon with the exclamation point and the "Alert: No Internet Connection" message.

Does anyone know whether this can be fixed?
