The user name or password for imap.gmail.com is incorrect

Hi!

It seems that this error is caused by the google's two step verification process. Your google password will not work while setting up iOS or Mac Mail client. The Google's two step verification process does not work with the mac or iOS mail apps as shown below which is a screen shot from the google account security setting. You will need to generate an application specific password from your google accounts security settings.

1. Click on the "Manage application-specific passwords" box
2. Generate an application password
3. Enter this password on your iOS or Mac Mail App while adding gmail account to "Mail, Contacts, Calendar" in settings.

Hi!

I am getting the same message when I try to add google account to Mail app in iOS 8.1. I am entering correct username and password.

Please clarify your response. I don't understand where I would go to reapply my gmail password beyond the mail app when I am prompted to enter the username and password.

This worked great for me. My only comment would be that my Google Settings were not the same as the screenshot posted. I found the correct location as follows: My Account - Sign-in & security - Signing in to Google - App passwords
