Data Doubler Question

Hello i have recently purchased my self a OWC Data Doubler Kit for my MacBook Pro 9.2. And i will be installing with Samsung Evo 500gb SSD into the data doubler kit. My question is as i will be taking out the optical drive ? Do i have to find an external enclosure for the original optical drive and use that or can i use any super drive that is available on the market ? Second question using a data doubler kit i have heard that it only runs at 3Gbps just clearing up if that is true.

Thankyou,

MacBook Pro

I suggest that you install the SSD where the current HDD resides. That way you will get the best performance from it. The speeds to the optical drive are slower than that to the HDD location.

Any external DVD drive will work with your MBP. You might be able to find an enclosure for your current MBP optical drive. Check the OWC web site.

Your best source of detail information on this subject is the OWC technical staff. They are competent and very helpful. You may contact them by phone or Internet chat.

Ciao.

You should never install a SSD in the optical drive bay. It should be your startup disk and you should install it in your startup bay, where your HD is now. Install the Data Doubler and put your hard drive there -> your model should be able to get 6.0Gbps throughput from your optical bay.

Good luck,

I probably should have mentioned first that i already have a SSD used as a primary drive. I use a Samsung Evo 1TB. I was just wanting to use the data doubler set up as a extra storage option for files that i don't use often ? Rather than carry a external storage around with me. I have read somewhere that you can set up the second drive as a Volume you can access on the desktop.

If you've installed the SSD in the 'old' HD boot bay, then all you'll need to do is install the Data Doubler, install the HD (old or new) in the DD bay and you'll have two volumes that you can use. You can even point user directories (except the Library) to the hard drive and keep your SSD relatively free - piling up your data on the HD drive in the DD bay.

You should be able to talk to the good folks at OWC and they can give you some help.

Good luck,
