My dock suddenly stopped loading. Now, all I see is an opaque gray bar across the bottom of the screen. I have tried unloading all apps, restarting,powering off and on. Any ideas?

The ffirst thing to try is a reset of your iPad. Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button continuously until the Apple logo appears. Then release the button and let the device restart. You will not lose data doing this. It's like a computer reboot.
Depending on which apps you had in your dock, I suppose that you could have hidden them if they were restricted in Settings>General>Restrictions. You can also remove all of the apps from the dock, so are you sure that didn't occur either?
@Demo, I feel horribly foolish for not checking that first, but my toddler has apparently become an expert at not only moving the icons around, but also creating new folders to hide them in. 🙂 Thanks for your help.
