Q: Can't update my payment method

I just got a brand new iPhone 6 yesterday.  Previous I had an iPod touch so I used the same apple ID.

Except I cannot even install free apps on it, because it says I need to update my payment method.

Using the method described in the support doc Change or remove your payment information from your iTunes Store account (Apple ID)   and going to my phone , the phone tells me I need to use my computer. Specifically it says "Paypal is not supported on this device.  To manage or change your payment method, go to the iTunes store on your computer " But the web page on the itunes store tells me I need to change it on the phone.

Unless it means I am supposd to use some itunes app that I dont even have installed on my computer?  That is incredibly crazy.  In order for me to download a  free app on my new iPhone I have to install some music program on an entrely different device?  What kind of user experience is that?  It makes zero sense to me.  I thought Apple was about making things simple, not adding levels of complexity.  Further, I cannot install itunes on this computer as we are behind a rather secure firewall.  But really why should I need a special app on my computer to update my account to use my phone, especially just to install a FREE app?

You need to use the iTunes programme on your computer, PayPal cannot be setup directly on an iOS device. If you don't have access to a computer with iTunes on it then do you have a credit card that you could put on your account instead, or do you get the 'none' option on the payment details screen ?

Thanks for the reply.  unfortunately I cant even get to the place where I would set none, at least not without a company.  Apparently I had Paypal set from years back, but now cannot delete it without the itunes program

I ended up using someone else's desktop but to me this whole thing calls into serious question Apple's credibility as a mobile company.  It makes absolutely zero sense that to use my new phone I have to have a PC program.  That is a paradigm that is at least a decade out of date.

What do you mean 'at least not without a company' ?

It is only, as far as I know, PayPal that requires access to a computer. If you want to leave feedback for Apple about it : http://www.apple.com/feedback/

Changing payment info : Change or remove your payment information from your iTunes Store account (Apple ID)

If you don't get the 'none' option : Why can’t I select None when I edit my Apple ID payment information?

Sorry, typo, should have been "without a computer".  The info you linked was the faq I followed, except it would not let me see or update any preferences there whatsoever on the phone- not only does it not let me select None, it didnt let me select or access it or even see it at all, whatsoever, outside of itunes.

There should be an option at least to update those preferences via a web browser and not have to rely on a computer program.  I have placed feedback and also contacted support, support never got back to me.  It is really not making me feel like I made the right choice on my new phone, for sure.

    Anyhow thanks.

Maybe as well as only being able to set PayPal on a computer you can only remove it there as well - I'm in the UK (I think PayPal is US only) so it's not something that I can try.
