Contact names not showing on lock screen

Hi

Since updating to the latest version of iOS 8 my iPhone 5S does not show contact names for SMS messages or calls on the lock screen. It just shows as their number, and appears as normal with their name as soon as I unlock my iPhone. Is this a new privacy setting or something and is there a way to change it?

Thanks!

iPhone 5s, iOS 8

I do not have this issue (with my iPhone 6, iOS 8.0.2). I've been thinking about what might possibly cause it, and don't have any good ideas.

So here are some possibly far-fetched things to think about:

Check Settings > Passcode > [five buttons in the "Allow access when locked" category]

Are they all "On"?

Check Settings > General > Language & Region > Region

Is it set correctly?

Sorry, I don't have the answer you're hoping for... I used Apple's online chat to see if a representative could tell me what setting to change, but no luck. He said that this behavior was expected in the newer iOS. They made a lot of improvements to messages and removed the contact names (according to him) to make more room on the lock screen for other notifications. He also said multiple times that Apple developers DO read every suggestion made at the apple.com/feedback website, so I submitted a request to make this configurable in a future iOS release.

I am having the same exact problem. Let me describe this situation a little better for you guys. I turn off my phone at night and when I turn it on and I have text messages/iMessages that were sent when the phone was off, appear on my lock screen as their phone numbers. In iOS 7.0, they came up when the phone came on as the name of the contact. Now, when I turn on my phone it shows the text/imessage as their phone number instead of their name. Annoying. You would think by now there would be a resolution. After I enter my code and go to messages, the names are all there. It's annoying and seems to be a continuing issue that will probably will go unresolved. I am assuming Apple thinks we all keep our phones on at night- not me.

I don't buy the Apple rep's argument at all. Both my wife and my daughter have iPhone 5s running IOS 8, and while my wife has noticed the phone number displaying instead of the senders name occasionally, my daughter does not have this issue at all. So, it's clearly a preference or glitch somewhere on my phone and the phones of the dozen or so people posting here.

I know this is an old thread, but this might help someone:

For me (iPhone 5, IOS 9.2) the following worked:

> Turn OFF Dial assist (Settings / Phone / Dial assist to OFF)

> Test it has worked (Lock phone, Get someone to text you and check it shows their name, not number, now)

> Turn ON dial assist again (assuming you want it)

> Test again as above

For me it now shows names, not numbers, and I have Dial Assist back on (which is how I prefer it)
