Q: 2009 MAC running painfully slow even after RAM upgrade to 16 Gb.

I upgraded the RAM from 4 Gb to 16 Gb thinking that was what was causing it to run slowly.  I then emptied by Cache Folders to free up even more space.  I haven't used my Mac for anything other than normal web browsing, email, and iTunes and yet it continues to get stuck and freeze on the spinning beach ball for extended periods of time.  Any ideas?

Please post an EtreCheck report of your system and we can look for any obvious signs. If you use any antivirus, or performance enhancing apps that is a good place to start. If you do, locate the developers instructions to remove the app and then remove it.

You can locate EtreCheck by clicking EtreCheck

    Good luck.

    OK,

Here is the problem, you installed.CleanMyMac2, this is considered malware for OS X and you will need to uninstall it. I'm not an expert on how to uninstall it however Linc Davis is. I would recommend searching for one of Linc's  recent posts regarding the correct steps for uninstalling it.

OS X is NOT like MS Windows that relies on third party apps to run well. If you simply run Software Update and install all the recommended updates OS X generally rewards users with years of trouble free service. DO NOT install antivirus apps, cleaning apps, or any other "help" apps!!!

How do I run the un-install if I've already removed Clean My Mac from the apps on my computer?

Download and run it again.  Another possible way is the following: download and run Find Any File to search for any files with "the application's' name"  and the "developer's name" in the file name.  For example for CleanMyMac2 you'd do 2 searches:

    1 - Name contains "cleanmymac2"

    2 - Name contains "macpaw".

Any files that are found can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop for deletion.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

Follow Old Toads instructions and then run an EtreCheck report after and look for any remnants of the app. If they are gone then test the computer for performance. It's a tough app to get rid of, simply removing it from your applications folder is not enough. Also rememeber after removing it to empty the Trash on your system.

    Good luck.

Ok, took your advice and downloaded the Find Any File App.  After cleaning up quite a few hidden files I am left with one that I can't get rid of:

    file:///private/var/run/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2.Agent.socket

    Any ideas?

Go to the Desktop and then to the Go ➙ Go to Folder menu option:

    Screen Shot 2014-10-08 at 12.19.30 PM.jpg

type in what you see in this screenshot:

    Screen Shot 2014-10-08 at 12.18.48 PM.jpg

That will take you to the run folder where you should be able to drag the file to the Trash bin in the Dock.  You'll probably have to give your Admin password to complete the process.

By the way I noticed you have Time Machine turned off, do you backup your computer? If not this is a HUGE error.

Followed your instructions but the file isn't there.  I had looked there previously too and didn't see it.  When I use the App to look for the file it shows it as existing but whatever reason it's not in the folder.

I'll take your advice on Time Machine too after we get this cleared up.
