Q: AHT -> ERROR

Hello all

Today I have done an Apple Hardware Test and it came up the next error: 4MEM/60/40000000: 0x7ef34b90

Do you know what that means?

Please, I am a bit concerned about this error.

Thank you

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

    Yes, it means you have a memory error. Replace your memory modules or remove one module and run the hardware test again. If the error re-occurs, then remove the module and insert the other one. Re-run the hardware test. If the error does not occur then the previous module is the bad one.

    It's a little bit strange, because on Informations->About system ->Memory(more or less) is shown that I have correctly installed 8GB of RAM memory. Or you mean hdd memory?

    Hi

    Unfortunately I found another error. It's 4/HDD/40000000: SATA(0,0).

    Can you please tell me what does it mean?

    System information does not do a thorough test on RAM. Otherwise it would take as long as running AHT to check all the RAM at startup.

    The RAM could still be damaged or failing, you need to remove modules & see which one causes the error. Ensure you always have RAM installed, otherwise the Mac will beep & fail to boot .

    Your new error may indicate the HD is having issues, however Apple do not publish lists of all the AHT errors so it may be a guess as to what it means.

    Take it to an Apple store or approved service centre if you have any Applecare. They can access more test tools & can lookup the error codes. It does seem like your Mac is having multiple issues, but sometimes AHT can report errors incorrectly!

    Thank you for the answer. Now I'm running another AHT but I have removed one bank of RAM. I have read this (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4356) on the Apple's site and I think it's right, because I have been doing AHT 3 or 4 times the past 2 days.

    That looks similar double check the error code if it happens again it looks different to the one you posted, but they are a pain to copy correctly. I tend to photograph them when screenshots are not available.

    Also try rember…

    http://www.kelleycomputing.net/rember/

    That is meant to be an alternative to AHT, but only checks RAM.

    I post you some photos taken with the error. But every time it seems to be a different error but every time regarding 4/MEM...

    This one was taken Wednesday 8/october: 811117068_3906858690603456778.jpg

    This one was taken today and regards SATA:

    Schermata 2014-10-10 alle 19.31.03.png

    And the last one regards the alleged damaged RAM:

    Schermata 2014-10-10 alle 19.34.54.png

    Now I will try an other AHT with the original Apple RAM.

    It's again me. I have done the test with rember and there results this thing:

    I don't know what it means, but I think I will contact the retailer of this particular RAM's and I'll ask to have another bank of RAM. Do you think it 's worth it?

    Macs are intolerant of Memory DIMMs which do not meet strict specifications. What brand of memory DIMMs do you have?

    PS: Let me know if you can't reach the website.

    Yes, I can see the link. These are Crucial DIMMs.

    Crucial, OWC, Samsung, Micron/Hynix are usually very reliable. If you leave the original DIMMs in place, does AHT still report an error? I have seen occasions where mixing two different brands can cause errors. Are the DIMMs of the  same brand mixed in memory banks, for example, Bank0 has Hynix, but Bank1 has Crucial, Bank2 has Hynix, and back 3 may be crucial. You can try putting DIMMs from the same manufacturer in adjacent memory banks, for example, Ban0 and 1 can contain Hynix, while Banks 2 3 can contain Crucial DIMMs.

    You should also verify the exact part numbers on the Crucial website memory selector, if possible.

    I have tried every single combination:

    - started with : bank 0 and 1 with Crucial -> 1 error

    - bank 0 with 1 Crucial and bank 1 empty  -> 0 errors

    - bank 0 with the other Crucial and bank 1 empty -> 1 error

    - bank 0 with the good one Crucial and bank 1 with the original(from apple) ->0 errors.

    At this point I suppose that 1 Crucial is damaged.

    It does look that way to me too.

    It is worth checking if the Mac has specific requirements in terms of how the RAM is inserted, e.g. some require slot 1 to be full before slot 2 etc.

    Apple menu > About this Mac >  Click More Info button > Memory, follow the link to the 'memory upgrade instructions'. The Support tab also has links to manuals for that model too.

    I don't understand what do you mean.

    I have installed RAMs in november 2013 and since then there weren't problems of any kind.

    I am pretty sure that I have installed compatible banks of RAM and in the right mode.

    And while I was doing the combinations with the RAMs I checked every time that the amount of RAM was right. I mean, if I installed 6GB of RAM, I have controlled that the system recognize them.
