    You will wait forever

There is NO code to unlock an iPhone .The Carrier access systems within Apple to change the iPhone status from locked to Orange to unlocked status

You then restore the iPhone to update

I have made at least 5 phone calls to Orange and had numerous promises but to phone me back but they never have!! Today I was even put on hold whilst the person phoned Apple and they said that Apple had sent me an unlock code. Not surprisingly I haven't received anything. Again I'm left pulling mu hair out. I have printed out the article about unlocking and I will phone them again in the morning. Thanks for your help.

    You don't get a code.

Just Restore your iPhone using iTunes.

They do this all the time

O2 usually sort within days and as I found out 3 no longer lock iPhones on contract, my 5S was  unlocked from walking out the store

It is EE who are the issue in UK they are not picking on you they do it all the time to their customers

I did the same with my iPhone 5s and bought it unlocked. The annoying thing is that I'm still an orange sim only customer so it shows that they care little for their customers or loyalty and the lies I've been told are amazing.

If you bought an "unlocked" phone, then it will not lock to any carrier.

If you bought a "SIM Free" phone, for example, from Carphone Warehouse, you did NOT buy an unlocked phone. You bought a phone that will lock to the first carrier used.

The phone that I am trying to get unlocked is my old iPhone 4 locked to Orange. The one I have replaced it with is an unlocked iPhone 5s. It is the iPhone 4 that Orange are messing me about with.

OK. Is it active on the Orange network? My understanding regarding the UK carriers is that they can't (won't) authorize an unlock unless the phone is currently active on their network and has been for some arbitrary period of time, and you pay whatever fee they charge for "unlocking".
