Q: Camera Brand Recommendations for Ease with iPhoto

Hi

I'm seeking recommendations for mid-level digital camera brands that have images that are highly compatible with iPhoto.

I'm not a professional photographer.  Just a proud father.

I never felt that my Sony cameras image files were as easy to upload and work with in iPhoto.  I like the look of Samsung cameras, but they state their cameras are designed for being very compatible with Android. So that seems like it will be tedious to use their images in iPhoto.

Anyhow, I'd like to hear good and bad experiences with various camera brands.

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

If you are shooting JPEG then any camera will be fine - I have used Sony exclusively for over ten years - not sure what you fine an issue with Sony and iPhoto but I have not seen it

There have been some issues with Kodak and a few with Nikon - but I would still choose based on my needs - if you are shooting RAW then you need to be sure they are supported - OS X Mavericks: Supported digital camera RAW formats

Unless you are at the very cheap end of the market - and here I'm talking about Barbie and Dora The Explorer cameras - the brand doesn't matter.

If the camera shots to a card, if it shoots Jpeg then it works with iPhoto.

In some cases you might need to remove the card from the camera and insert it in a card reader, rather that USB able straight from the Mac. Some would argue that this is a better way to work anyway.

If you can explain what was difficult with uploading from the Sony, it might help. Samsung cameras work with any device. Android is a phone OS not a computer one.

Uploading the images from the camera should be the easy part.  When picking a camera to catch the important moments in life of your kids, pick a camera that takes great photos, but has a "point and shoot" feeling. You will want a camera that is ready, when you need it, and not have to look for the manual or changing lenses, when your kid makes the first walking step.

I'd go for a camera with a wide range zoom, auto focus plus manual focus, built-in flash, and menus and controls that are easy to understand and to find.  And I would never buy a camera without a view finder, because the displays are hard to use in bright sunlight in the garden.

Good luck with that! This will limit your options pretty severely in a point and shoot. 8^)

I generally use Canon's and have had few issues with DSLR's or Point and Shoots. But I have been able to get the images off of almost any camera, as long as they have an SD card!

Unfortunately, yes. But it narrows down the field nicely.
